I'm insulted!

Kerry just said that only 3 people in the crowd would be subject to higher taxes under his plan as president. Those 3 people would be himself, President Bush and Charlie Gibson.
In other words, everyone else in the crowd is too uneducated to have a job paying 200k plus.
Now, don't get me wrong, I don't make 200k per year, but I thought that was a rather rude comment. How can you determine how much money a person makes by looking at them?

I'll admit that it was my mistake to say “In other words.”
That is just how I took it.
I will be happy to post Kerry's exact words when the transcripts come out.

"How does he know who his audience is?"
I guess that the African American male and the heavy set Caucasian woman just don't appear to be rich.

He couldn't hear that he already said here two other times.
Public speaking is not easy.

I'm not at all "insulted," but I'll admit I wondered how Kerry knew - if it's true - that no one in the audience earns more than $200K. ???

edited to add: I guess it would be more accurate to say I wondered how Kerry suspected such.

He did say he "suspected" and since very few people make over 200,000 a year, it's probably a pretty good guess.

Anyone insulted by that remark is just looking for an excuse to be insulted.

I would like to know how many times he said "I have a plan" during the debate. DD asked me after the debate, "what is his plan?!"

I hate to say it, but i agree on this one, but I think the needs to learn how to speak intelligently is up the same alley.

Don't know if your post is at all directed to me, but if so I'd like to call attention to my edit regarding my choice of words ("knew" vs. "suspected").

It very well might have been a good guess; and it seemed to me that Kerry was attempting to be a bit humorous in what he said.

As I stated previously, I don't feel at all insulted by the remark. I do think if that's what he "suspected," maybe it was a thought better kept to himself.

At bottom, though, no big deal in my book. Just something that gave me pause to wonder: how could he know/guess 'bout the audience participants' incomes?

If you Kerry supporters can't see that he was taking what appeared to be an elitist jab at the way those people "looked", then you are beyond help.

What does someone who makes $200,000 look like? Is that any different that someone who makes $199,999?

Even if he didn't do it intentionally, it sure came across that way.


But I have noticed something and I'm sure that I'm not the only one.

I've notice that while Bush supporters criticize both Kerry (more so than) and Bush, the Kerry supporters never or very rarely criticise anything he does.

What is that?

Is he *that* perfect?

Actually, right now there are 2 internets. The 'Internet' and now they are working on 'Internet 2'. It's a high speed data exchanging network being setup by those who originally setup the internet so many many years ago. It's a great idea, but we probably won't see the spoils of the higher speeds as consumers.

My DH and I both looked at each other and said, "Now that was rude." We both perceived his comment that way because he looked over the seated people and said that after looking around this group he suspected only 3 people made over $200,000. I asked my DH if it was the clothing that told him that or what? Maybe they weren't wearing designer suits. I was a bit offended by his interpretation of his audience.

first of all, way to go with the generalizations. being highly educated and making lots of money don't go hand in hand. plenty of super-educated people make mediocre salaries and plenty of college dropouts are RICH.

second of all, how many people in missouri do you think make over $200,000? it is not average to make over $200,000/year. the median annual income in st. louis (i.e. non-rural missouri) in 2003 was $32,700. the 90th percentile in st. louis in 2003 was $66,140.

i think it is a very safe assumption that no one in the audience made more than $200,000. honestly, i find it sort of surprising that people were offended by it.

I guarantee there is no way anyone can look at me and tell how much I make or how much I am worth (walk around in blue jeans and a t-shirt most of the time)....It was rude and condescending, no way around it.

Ok then what was the point of even making that comment?

He could have just a easily said the same thing in a way that would haven't offended ANYONE.

Like, my tax plan will affect only those that make over $200,000. Period.

There was absolutely no reason to put qualifiers on it or make a personal reference like he did.
