im 32 years old and I want to go back to school next year to become a nurse/ midwife. Or maybe a doctor OB/Gyn but everyone I talk to says im too old. I want to wait until my youngest will be in school full time and that will be one more year.

Im I too old maybe just for the doctor?/

Nope, you are NEVER too old! If that is what you want, go for it. This way you have more experience behind you and that can work to your advantage.

you are NOT too old!! go for it!

WHO SAID THAT? SMACK THEM!
Go after your dream. ;)

Go for it! You are definitely not too old.

Your never to old to follow your dream...go for it. Have you thought about taking some of your basic classes over the internet right now, that way you could get a jump start.

Ann Landers or Dear Abby (can't remember which) once said you will be that age someday anyway...why not be that age AND have achieved your dream? :) Following a dream is what makes life worth living, go for it!

I just sat in film class next to a woman in her 40's who decided after working at Shopper's Drug Mart for years, to get into the film industry. I thought it was great! You can change jobs at anytime in your life. Aslong as you know all the work that is ahead of you and you're ok with it, I'd say go for it!
Good-luck!

I was 30 when I went back to school, and I was told statistically 30 years old is the average college students age. Go figure.

By the way, it is ILLEGAL to discriminate against a candidate for medical school based on their age (from someone who is a voting member of my university's college of medicine).

Hmm, that's interesting, Deb. Vet schools definitely did discriminate and some put it in writing in their brochures. The schools are responsible for staffing the country with doctors, and they have to take into consideration the # of productive years they will get from their students, especially after investing a good amount of government dollars in them.

I think our oldest student was around 32 when she started. But you have to take into consideration that you'll have to take a few years of college courses first, and then you'll have to do a residency after med school, which isn't required of general practitioner vets.

OhMari-- some guy told me that the ave age of a college student is 29 the other day. I thought he was nuts. I'm wondering if a small number of extremely old students (taking classes in art history for fun) bring the average age up so high. I think a more accurate measurement of the "average" college student would be mean (or would it be median? I don't remember exactly the difference). Students above 26 or so were definitely not the norm when I was in college.

Go for it!! :D

I used to be an accountant. I stayed home for several years with my DD's then decided that I wanted a different career. I went back to University and just graduated in May with a BA (Hons) in Health Promotion and I have been accepted onto the Child Health and Social care Masters programme which starts in Sept. I am 43!!

The University that I went to approx. a third of the students were classified as mature (over 21) and I knew lots of students that were 35 plus.

Good Luck with your decision. I am sure glad that I decided to go for it!! :D

Hmmmm... As someone who is facing this exact same decision at age 32, I'll tell you what I've decided.

Is 32 too old to start trying to get into med school? Yep! Yeah, yeah, yeah. I know, "You're never too old to follow your dream." and all those trite expressions, but you have to look at the reality of the situation as well. My best friend keeps telling me to go for med school and to quit even thinking about nursing school as an alternative. She's telling me I always wanted to go to med school but would not admit it even to myself. Is she right? Yep. We've been best friends since we were about 10 and she knows me better than even I know myself sometime.

Why won't I consider med school now that I'm this age?
#1 Med school is EXTREMELY tough to get into. I'm sure I could have done it when I was in my early 20's, but now I'm not so sure.
#2 I would have to go back and get a bachelor's in biology or another related are. (my poli sci major won't do me much good for medical school) At the very least, I would have to take 1-2 years of hard science classes. Unless you have a degree in biology already, you'll probably have a bunch of undergrad classes you'll have to take, and depending on how old a biology or pre-med degree is, you may have to repeat the classes anyway.
#3 MCAT. This just scares me. :)
#4 Med school. Add on another 4 years of going full time and studying day and night.
#5 Residency. You'll work an average of 80-90 hours per week, and you could work 100+ hours each week for very little pay. Plus, tack on another 4 years for an OB-Gyn residency or 3 years for pediatrics (those happen to be the 2 I'm interested in)

So, in my case, it would take me about 10 years to actually become an MD. By then, my kids would be 16 and 18, and I would have been completely absent from their lives that entire time. Is that worth it to follow my dream? No way! My kids will always come first, and I'm not going to miss them growing up for anything. I'm telling you this because I think you have to be realistic and really look long and hard at what medical school would involve and the sacrifices not just you, but your family would also have to make.

Now, is nursing school a reality? Absolutely!!! You're definitely not too old to do that. Depending on whether you want to get your LVN, RN, or BSN, you can do this from start to finish in as little as one year going full time. Be warned, though. The curriculum for nursing school is very tough as well. It's not a walk in the park, but if you're willing to work hard and study lots, it's definitely doable at age 32. :)

I would go for it ~ You are a long time dead.

Good Luck.

Go For IT !!! It takes a brave person to follow her dreams.
Good luck.
