I have black hair and for a long time - well, about 6 years - I colored it. Recently I grew tired of all that coloring and I decided to just let my gray come out. Now it is a salt and pepper color - actually black and silver. People love it and I get comments on my beautiful hair. It has not grown out all the way yet and I cannot wait for the rest of the color to be trimmed off. The other day I was out shopping and an older man came up to me and said "I'm not trying to flirt with you, but I when you get home I want you to tell your husband he has a beautiful wife." He said "I love your hair. You are a beautiful, natural woman." I thought it was funny, but I thanked him. Luckily, my face is aging well, so I have decided to let the gray come out and concentrate on keeping my complexion nice instead.
I used to be in the all-natural camp. "Be proud of that gray badge of courage, you earned it" I said. Then my DH's CCU nurse thought i was his mother! I mean, how bad do you have to look to be mistaken for a critical patient's mom? And to make matters worse, my fabulous hairdresser used to be my little mother's helper when she was nine.
I'm 44 and I see 4 gray hairs every once in a while. I think they've been there since high school but I have really curly red hair and they don't show up much. But then I went and straightened my hair one day (for fun) and there they were, acting like they belonged there or something! What nerve! Anyway, if more start showing up I guess I'll have to start dying it. My redheaded aunt is in her late 60's and she just keeps fading blonder and blonder, I'm hoping my hair will do the same thing.
I've embraced my gray hairs. After reading the thread a couple of days ago about how much people pay to have their hair colored, I'm even happier with my choice.
OK
Here is what I did.
Go to a wig shop.
Try on different colors of wigs.
Pick your favorite color.
That you like.
You have to look at yourself everyday & be happy with it.
I'm a bottled blonde & love it.
Grey hair doesn't have a thing to do with age.
you are only as old as you feel.
They make perms for color treated hair. Even highlighted hair. I'd rather do one or the other but you can safely do both. Back several years ago when everyone was getting perms, we also did both. I don't think it the best treatment of the hair but it can be done. They say to wait a week in between services. I usually do try to do that but I have done it all in the same day (to someone else, not myself!! I probably would never perm and highlight my hair!)
I have red hair and no immediate family members have it but I remember my great grandma's hair was red before she died - lighter than when she was younger but red none the less.....
Turning 50 won't be scary you if you do it in WDW !!
That's what I did in October. I spent my 50th Birthday in Magic Kingdom!
(also a great excuse to go!)
Hey, sounds great to me. I will have to show DH this post!! If I am lucky maybe they will have the Christmas lights up still. I doubt it though since my birthday is the 22nd. Will have to go a little earlier than my actual birthday.
