At work you get 7 absences a year total. (sick days, not planned vacation)
4 is a verbal warning
5 is a written warning
6 is suspension
7 you outta here!!

So last October, my mom was very sick. three times during that month I had to leave work a couple hours early (at most) to go to the hospital. So apparently leaving early counts also, so that's three absences right there.

In Feb I had food poisoning and was out for three days. That counts as one absence, so there was my fourth...verbal warning.

Now in July I had a problem. I had to go to the doctor to get the prescription, half day...fifth absence, written warning.

Now comes raise time...my boss tells me with my performance and everything I bring to work, I would have gotten a 5% raise(highest), but because of my written warning, I only get a 2% raise!!! Ugh, that blows. I just put it towards my retirement fund and am going to pretend I didn't even get one!

And I called my mom and yelled at her for being sick and costing me a 5% raise!! :rotfl:

Anyway, I'm just annoyed even though I know those are the rules.

Sheesh - where do you work that has such a strict policy?

Hey - at least you got a raise, right? haha

Ok, I'm really confused. If you get 7 absences a year total, why do you get fired when you have your 7th absence?

I agree that that is a really strict policy. What kind of place do you work at? I get 3 weeks sick/family leave and when my dad had a stroke and passed away several months later, I ended up using that plus the days I had that rolled over from other years.

That is pretty strict. The company I worked for before I became a SAHM paid us for 5 or 6 sick days year. If you needed more than that you could stay home sick and not get paid.

You have 7, but you aren't supposed to use them.
I work at a hospital, but not in a clinical position.

OMG!!! :earseek:

Your probably going to hate me for this but I get 200 PAID SICK DAYS a year!!! Yes, you heard me right 200. They don't carry over, each year I have 200 days. Plus 5 weeks vacation time.

I worked someplace that had a policy like that once. Except it was 5 days. I was sick and took 2 in January and had to have a meeting with the boss where he proceeded to tell me "This isn't good - you only have three for the rest of the year." Thanks genius!

Although as a SAHM I get no sick days, we do have a very liberal nap policy!! ;)

Ouch -- that is really one tough policy! But I know what it's like to work somewhere where you have sick time, but you're not really supposed to take it. Drag your sorry sick carcass to the office -- ensuring you infect everyone you come in contact with -- because work is more important than anything else, including your health. (I dragged myself to work while fighting walking pnuenomia one time.)

I wonder if your employer got that strict because a few people abused the policy. That's what happened with my former employer.

I suppose you need to ask yourself: are you truly happy working there or would it be better to look for a job somewhere else? This place -- a hospital no less -- doesn't sound all that concerned about its employee's work/life balance. :(

Yep, I feel your pain.

At least at my place, if you get written up for it, and then manage to stay "clean" for three months, the write up gets "erased".

Well, that's just silly. I'm sorry that they're like that. It's a hospital for goodness sake, you'd think they'd understand that people get sick.

The path I pursued in my field is very specialized, and not everywhere does it this way. (yet!) So I'm at a place where it will look great on my resume(basically starting up the program), close enough to where I can walk if I want, and paid well.

I guess I just have to take the good with the bad, and use my sick time veeery sparingly! :teeth:

Well, coming from a supervisor's perspective, just because you *have* something doesn't mean you should abuse it (not saying you were, but you know what I mean).

I have no limit on my sick days because i'm a salaried associate, however if I were out 7 instances (usually an instance is one day up to five days before disability would kick in) that's a lot of time out of the office when you factor in your vacation time. I've had hourly associates use all of their paid sick time for nonsense and then when they were really sick, they were out of time, and we don't allow for unpaid absences. Unfortunately, the workload doesn't stop if someone is out ill (of course it's different if you're on Disability) and the rest of the staff can and does end up resenting the person using all their time every year. Also, the person I'm thinking of made a pattern of her illnesses, so they were either the Monday after she was already out a week on vacation or a Friday so she could have a 3 day weekend. I'm not saying she was never sick, but it started to get out of control and I did have to write her up for it.

I also work at a hospital with a similar policy. They don't want you to come to work sick, but they don't want you to be sick and miss work. If you come in late/leave more than 2 hours early, it's counted as a day absent. Many hospitals have really cracked down on their attendance policies.

I think everyone is going to hate you for that, or well just be really really jealous! ;)

I get 5 "call in" days. Meaning I don't have to be sick to use them.

do the math, there are approximately 260 weekdays per year,

take 200 sick days, + 25 vacation days= 225 days of leave to use...subtract that from 260 and you would only have to work 35 days per year...

quite a job...

I asked for Disability Ins. in my review this past July. I am going to be 44 and I could be laid up for 6 weeks, with a heart attack, or women problems, who knows. I had no sick days either. So I asked if I could have some sick days.

My boss came back with 2 sick days a year and no carry over. I work in a church/school setting and he told me teachers get 7 because they are around kids all day and tend to get more sick.

I work with parishioners and I am in the same building as the kids and teachers. Hello-same jerms.

My boss was more concerned with who could do my job if I became sick with no pay. He wants me to find someone to learn my job in case something happens to me.

I love/hate my job.
