I'm claustrophobic -- should I ride Mission Space?

I was nervous and the kids were a bit nervous but it was a blast. Not too bad. Everyone coming out looked good, I saw no one looking sick at all.

while I LOVE this ride, I can tell you not to be too deceived by those coming off of the ride doing fine, even older people. People DO come off sick, as my brother in law did, and it can ruin the rest of your entire day.

Wow...I'm really claustrophobic and I'm getting short of breath by just reading these posts.

No way would I try to go on Mission Space..... :worried:

I have mild claustrophobia, usually I can handle things if I just concentrate on staying calm. What I do when in doubt if I can handle somethig I think if I would be able to stay calm if the ride gets stuck. I can hold it together for the normal course of the ride but if it gets stuck I would probably freak. I learned to do this after getting stuck on a coaster at Six Flags that had a shoulder restaint that kept me from moving at all. We were only stuck for about 20 minutes but I was not handling it well. I have never meen to DW so never been on MS but reading these posts all I can think about is the ride breaking down and not being able to get out.

I was never claustrophobic before May 8, 2005 until I rode Mission"Space. I thought I was going to die!!!! I was so worried about getting sick to my stomach that I didn't even think about the closed in space. I almost blacked out in the ride so I would say be careful if you chose to ride it. I was screaming and hitting the buttons the whole time on the ride. The poor guy that wa sin our compartment darted for the door as soon as they opened. I think I made him deaf and me claustrophobic :guilty:

Mission:Space causes clautrophobic nervousness in me!

i'm very claustophobic and wondered how i would do on this ride so was nervous about trying it ( it wouldn't be the first time i've freaked in public and figured it wouldn't be the last and i really wanted to go) and came up with a game plan to ward off a crazy attack mid flight( hehe)

the result was i loved it !

my hints are :

do sit in the middle of the capsule, not the first or last in line in other words

don't watch them shut the doors( does me in every time)

do read the instructions or shut your eyes till the screen comes on.( it's ok as the ride hasn't really started so you won't get sick) once it's on it looks like it's outside so it feels fine plus there is fresh air.it's a little disconcerting when the screen comes toward you after you sit down but prepare yourself and keep telling yourself you have plenty of room and air cause you do! make yourself breath slowly and it will help calm your nerves.

don't look around the capsule and you won't feel so closed in. just watch your own screen. follow all the other instructions too so you don't get sick

if i can do it anyone can as i am really claustrophobic( just ask the MRI tech who had to pull me in and out 6 or 7 times and my kids/husband who have witnessed many " crazed eyed/ screaming at the top of my lungs due to tight/dark space incidences" with me, can't even read A BOOk about a cave much less watch a movie( universal back to the future made me have one of the crazed attacks when you go into the cave) or go in one:blush: however , with MS it's a fun ride and really was not as tight inside as i thought it would be. just be prepared and make yourself stay calm. i figured it's kind of like labor, if you know what's coming it's easier to take it.

my rule of thumb would be if you can do the tom sawyer caves you can do this as i can't do the caves. if you can do star tours ( when they shut you in) it is a similar sensation when they shut the door( just don't look)..now if i could just master an airplane ( long metal tube, close together seats, piped in air and :rotfl2: they shut the door)

Yup, exactly. That was one of my fears the second time around. And I hear it's happened.

If you are truly claustrophobic, please, please, please do not ride this ride for your own sake and for the sake of the people traveling with you. I am mildly claustrophobic and this was the ABSOLUTE worst experience with it I have ever had. It ruined nearly the entire day- the nausea, the headache and the general stress of it all. So not worth ruining a day at WDW!!!

As much as I dig this ride, I can totally see how it would freak out a claustrophobic. I would probably skip it if I were. This isn't one of those quick 3-minute rides, and I would hate for you to feel trapped in there! :scared1:

ok, mildly claustrophobic (sedate for mri, crowded elevators-i take the stairs)and MS didn't bother me, but it is the ONLY ride ever to make me ill-not on the ride but about 10 minutes after, dizzy, nausea, had to lay down, took a 45 minute siesta in our car (it was Feb, parked under a tree). What ticked me off is DH and DS 10 rode 3 times in a row.....and bring it up everytime the word EPCOT is said.

i think the nausea etc.would be more due to motion sickness than claustrophobia

I would highly suggest without looking at anyone else's reply, that you are in an enclosed area, and would never suggest that someone who is closetrophobic try it

Yes, I think you should ride it because I would love to be sitting next to you when you do. I think that would be the "plus" experience Disney is always trying to build into their attractions.

My heart is racing just reading everyones opinions.....brings back the memories when I rode it. I am I guess mildy claustophobic, and when it came time to get in the capsule, my 11yr DD freaked out. She stayed out, my DH, DD, DS went into other capsule. Now I was with a father and young son.
When the door closed, I sort of freaked and said I can't do this. Not a word from the other two! I started to look for a button to press to get someone's attention to get out and there wasn't one. So I told myself to get a grip or loose it. After the "take" off, it wasn't bad. Would I go on again...NO WAY. But I can say been there done that!!! My legs were like jello for awhile, didn't feel so great. I think having my DD upset set me off a little! :bitelip:

i am claustrophobic and get motion sickness too.

i didn't ride mission space last week - because i was told that the rest comes right down into your face and they put cold air into your face.

i would just about have a heart attack.

i would say no - but if you are brave enough - then do it.

:rotfl2: in that case i'm charging Disney an "entertainment fee" next time i freak in the tom sawyer caves :rotfl2:

How long a ride is Mission Space? I am mildly claustrophobic...have more of a problem with being crowded than simply being closed in...so I think I can handle it. But, I need to be able to tell myself "it will be over in just ___ minutes."

I would also be interested in the duration time of the ride. I think that knowing in advance all of the things that happen - like the screen coming closer and making the space smaller is a plus, if that was a surprise, I think it would do me in.
