I work(ed) for our local Sylvan Learning Center. I was a part time Progress Manager, a step up from just a teacher. I stopped working in June, an unofficial maternity leave. I left things very open-ended. I'd be back sometime this fall, not sure how many hours, etc. No Problem!

Our 3 Sylvans are owned by a married couple. This spring they gave my "boss" managing control of the 3 Sylvans. She gave herself some fancy title.

I called my boss in Sept. Told her I could work Sat. mornings, she has called me twice. I told her I could work one night a week. She hasn't called at all. I stopped in this week, told her I need some "regular" hours/week. She said...business is slow and you are first on the list when things pick up.

I've been employed there for 3 years this month. Longer than anyone else including my boss. The only raise I've ever gotten was last year when I went from teacher to progress manager.

I'm very ANNOYED by not getting any hours. Shouldn't she give me hours over other teachers...seniority? Am I right? I want to call the owners and tell them I'm getting shafted!!!! But I'm not sure if that's appropriate. I'm just annoyed.

Can you tell I don't really like my "boss"?????

UGH! We really need the $$$ right now and she's not letting me work. I don't know what to do!

Thanks for listening...............

Is there something else you could do in the interim to make some money? Maybe tutoring individual students out of your home or getting some hours at another place like Sylvan? Here's hoping the best for you. . .

Pembo, How many hours were you getting working at Sylvan? I have my perfect part-time job planned for when I retire. I want to be a school crossing guard. I would only have to work 1 hour in the morning, 1 hour in the afternoon, and my summers would be free. Here in Barberton, our crossing guards are making $7.50 an hour. If your DH could arrange his time maybe being a school crossing guard would be the perfect job for you.

Gotta tell ya.....No matter how long you've worked there in the past, "bosses" never enjoy being told when it's convenient for "you" to work. They are going to give hours to the employees who can work when the boss wants them to work. It's all a give and take in these types of positions that have odd hours, and hours that come up on short notice.

When I was in retail management, if I needed someone to unexpectedly work on a Saturday night, well, I'd frequently have to trade something for it. "Sure, if you help me out on Saturday night, you can have next Friday off". It worked the other way too, if an employee needed a certain day off, they'd trade/negotiate for maybe a shift that wasn't so popular so they could get what they want.

When you march in there and tell the "boss" which one night, or one morning a week you can work...You leave no negotiating room and don't make for a very cooperative employee. Whether or not you like the boss, (or the boss likes you), really has no effect on the situation you described.

I agree...bosses give the hours to whoever works the ones they want. And it depends how they dole out the hours. When the hospital was in "slow season," everyone in our dept. had to give up 4 hours a week as opposed to the newest one on board taking the entire cut in hours.
