Hi Everyone--

We'll be celebrating DH's 40th birthday in March and I would like to do something extra special. Can I get opinions of the Illuminations cruise? Is it a private boat just for our party? Is there something else you would recommend instead? TIA!

We did an Illuminations cruise for my twins bday 9 years ago and sometimes they still talk about the birthday boat. I had paid extra for it to be decorated so as we went by some of the docks people would shout out happy birthday which made them feel very special. The captain was fantastic and really made our cruise memorable. It is the little things but for an example, he obviously knew from experience when the big torch lights would go out so he told my children to take a big breath and blow the one nearest us out when he told them to. It was timed perfection. I know your DH won't buy that kind of trick but just sharing how the captain went that extra mile to make our trip fun. It is just your group unless you decide to invite/open it up to others. We had invited some friends who lived locally to join us because it didn't require a park ticket but unfortunately at the last second they had to back out (their house got broken into) so we just had the 5 of us. We just went to Disney again this past July and the children did not want to do the cruise again but it was something I will always remember.

We did the cruise in February and loved it!! The boat holds up to 10 people, but only your party. They provide drinks, snacks and even a blanket if the night is chilly. We had 4 adults, two kids, a toddler and an infant - and they all had a wonderful time. I would highly recommend it!

We did it about 4 years ago, it's definitely an awesome experience. It's not something we will do on every trip just to keep it special, but we will definitely try it again someday.

I was expecting the boat driver to be more of a boat driver than a tour guide, but he was extremely knowledgable about the surrounding resorts as well as the story of illuminations.

I haven't heard about this. I may look into it as having 2 older and 2 younger kids may be quite a hassle in finding a good spot to watch Illuminations.

I'll give my take on it when we went a few years ago. You board at the Yacht and Beach club marina. They then motor you out towards Hollywood Studios. Say what? Yes, they take you on a scenic trip and if you have a good captain they will share stories and trivia. This is a time for you to just relax and enjoy some of the snacks that are on board. Finally, you arrive at EPCOT. They pull you out under the bridge between the UK and France. (See the green line in image). The boats are lashed to one another. You then view the fireworks, and then leave in reverse order in which you arrived. After which they motor you back to the dock, you may tip if you want, and say good night.

The viewing is acceptable, I would even say good. There are certainly worse places you can be. You also don't have to claim your spot far in advance, but remember your entire time from check in to drop off is about 90 minutes-2 hours. The same photo shows a circle where the show center (globe) is. Since you are so low, the surrounding buildings and the two tree islands can block some of the views of the countries lit up and some of the lower proximity shots. The view of the globe was acceptable and on par from viewing from this bridge location (which is often a favorite place for many due to location).

I think if you look at the price person, the value is certainly there when you add more folks than just 2. You can really wolf down the chips, cookies, trail mix, water, and sodas then. $300 for 2people is a bit much, especially for a 20 minute show. When we went we also had the christmas holiday finale which really added additional value to the trip, so I would recommend that higher than a normal fireworks night. We also used a DVC discount.
