I haven't seen this posted here yet, but I apologize if someone has beat me to it.

Just in time for back-to-school shoping! IL is having a sales tax holiday Aug. 6-15, on certain items you can get a reduced sales tax rate. Qualifying items include certain clothing and footwear with a retail selling price of less than $100, and certain school supplies (with no $100 threshold). The link I posted above takes you to the IL irs site, there is a red banner on the top to take you to a link with all the details. The link was developed for retailers but it does have the complete list of qualifying items.

Wow! Thanks for this. Has Illinois ever had a tax holiday??? I don't recall one. I have heard about it in other states.

Its good for us, but not so sure that it is good for the state. We are already in such deep trouble.

I am planning to take my DDs clothes shopping during that time!

Just what our broke state needs!(sarcastic tone) Unfortunately, our schools will continue to suffer due to lack of funding.

Yup take the money away from the schools (since that is the ONLY thing in the whole budget that Quinn can possibly find to cut) and let's all spend it on clothes and pencils! I'm all for low taxes, but this is just pandering. The rules are confusing too--like pencils count but paint doesn't? Athletic shoes count, but soccer cleats, not?

Thank you to the OP for posting this. I really appreciate it! I have been thinking about clothes shopping for my two kids since they have both grown so much over the summer. This will come in handy for me, not so much for the state.
Thank you!!!:cool1:

Bathing suits count too! That was never an item on my kids school list!

I have mixed feelings on it. On the one hand it makes it more affordable for people to do their back to school shopping at a time when a lot of people are just getting by, on the other hand the state needs every dime it can get.

As far as I know, this is IL's first sales tax holiday. I've lived here my whole life (34 years) and I can't remember ever having one before.

Yes, it is IL's first sales tax holiday. Like bettymae, I have mixed feelings about it. I have bought most of the kids' back-to-school supplies already since they are cheap now (25 cent crayons and glue and 1.00 markers.

I am not sure what I will buy during the sales tax holiday. I, typically wait to buy long pants and truly fall clothes since my kids will grow between now and when they will need them towards the end of September and October. Also, the stores will probably be reducing the price of the fall clothes in Sept and Oct too, so, I might save more if I wait.

I need a new wardrobe and an IL tax holiday is perfect for me since I have to replace everything in my wardrobe due to losing 80 lbs while being in the hospital. Being an IL resident, this is only going to drive our state further in debt, but I am going to take advantage of it, like everyone else out there.

Illinois resident, here, too...

Though it wasn't yet mentioned in this thread, laptops/netbooks are not included in this tax holiday.

Even though sales tax revenues on these items will be lost, the overall sales of the school clothes/supplies will remain in Illinois (as opposed to neighboring states - we tend to do a lot of our back-to-school shopping in St. Louis, which is just minutes away and offers a tax holiday, every year).

In IL, I don't think its tax free. I think its a 5% reduction. At least, that is how I read the information provided in the link. So, in Chicago, it will be about 10% - 5% = 5%. So you are still paying 5%.

Is that correct?

Maggie

That's the way I read it-5% off the regular sales taxes. In our area, taxes range between 6.25 and 8.25(depending on the county), so taxes would go down to 1.25 and 3.25 which is still a great deal on taxes and you have to read the qualifying list of items carefully, but there is a large amount of qualifying items on the list that I would use or members of my family would use.
