I spent a weekend at the World for a business trip. I wasn't sure it was actually going to happen until the last minute, so I didn't book any reservations.
So, last Saturday night, 3 of us from the meeting headed out for the Boardwalk area. The plan was to find something to eat, then head to Jellyrolls.
We wandered by Il Mulino in the Swan and checked out the menu. It looked great (if a little pricy for what we wanted to spend).
We spent a few minutes in the bar up front. Great place. Very relaxing, subdued environment. The servers were attentive.
Then we went into the restaurant and were seated. Again, subdued, relaxed environment. We were seated in a back corner, which was fine.
Now the problems began. We waited. And waited. And waited for the server to take a drink order. The place was not busy (it was still fairly early). When we finally got our drinks, we were also served a complimentary sausage and eggplant antipasti. I thought it was great. The other two in the party actually spit it out though. They hated it. My only complaint was that it was very salty, but I ate the entire plate.
We ordered our meal. We'd had a huge, late lunch at our meeting, so we weren't looking for a lot. Each of us ordered an entree, and I ordered a salad. The waiter's reaction was literally "That's it? No appetizers? No wine?" He was clearly irritated that we weren't going to be a big order table. My multiple Crown & 7 doubles apparently weren't going to make him happy. After that, he really disappeared. We never saw him again. He was replaced with his co-server (who did a great job).
Now, the food. I got a beef-filled tortellini. It was good, but not great. It almost tasted like something I'd make from a package at home. The big plus was that it was a HUGE plate of food. For a place where the waiter was pushing us to order additional food, I was surprised at the big portions.
Both of my co-workers ordered the same thing: some sort of chicken dish (sorry, but I don't remember exactly what). After two bites, they both were disgusted. I thought they were just being picky (they're usually not at all), so I tried a bite. It was terrible! It wasn't just like the flavor wasn't to my liking: It really tasted like the chicken was bad.
They both sent their plates back and got the same tortellini as I had. It came out very quickly and they ended up happy with it.
I'd probably eat there again if I had no other choice, but I wouldn't go back if there were other options. The place just wasn't worth the price.
It's actually a depressing concept: I want to say that the moral of the story is to make advance dining reservations to ensure you eat at a great place.... but then you'd never get to try anything new.
Ill Mulino = swing and a miss.
