IKEA (Now Taco Bell and other food agencies) Meatball scandal increasingly disturbing

Realistically, why is one animal different from the other? Is it a cultural thing?

I mean, obviously, I wouldn't want to find out I ate kitten or puppy, but, on the other hand, meat is meat.

Donner, party of one ...

The main difference is safety precautions and laws. I used to ride horses and I cannot tell you the amount of products that horse owners buy that say in bold letters: "DO NOT USE ON ANIMALS FOR HUMAN CONSUMPTION". These are also on a lot of dog/cat products (medicine, especially and things such as fly sprays). You can really never know, unless an animal is born and raised for food...though even then it seems it can be a bit sketch, but let's not get into that.

Ick. Never thought of that.

I guess you can't even make the argument "Everything being equal" because that's probably the issue right there.

I'll just go back to thinking up bad puns!

Nobody that I've spoken to about this here in the UK has been particularly grossed out about eating horsemeat itself but what is concerning to many is the potential risk from bute and other chemicals and, of course, the loss of trust in food producers and supermarkets.

On the upside, independent butchers are doing well and it has made for comedy gold. There's a website where you can calculate how much of a horse you will have eaten, depending on how many frozen burgers or lasagnes you've eaten.

Let's hope the FDA is more diligent on this side of the pond. If not, then saddle up!

"It's 10 PM, do you know where your horse is?"

It is definitely something I think I would like to do in the future.

It is something I kind of struggle with because we are big animal lovers...and I feel that tug inside my head (and my heart) that eating meat doesn't go along with that.

I ate meat for many years and finally became vegan. I only wish I had done it years earlier. My health is better, and I feel better not causing animal suffering. I too love animals, and I had to mentally block it out every time I ate a burger or an egg. Now I feel like I live with a clearer conscience. It still breaks my heart to think of what happens to so many animals but at least I am not contributing to it.

Give it a try! It's easier than you think.

Three words: chronic wasting disease.

Thankfully we have not had any cases in our state (Alabama). The CDC website also states there is no evidence that CWD has transmitted to humans. (But I wouldn't chance it if it was here!)

add me to the group that never understood why we feel its ok to eat some animals without any thought, and eating others is considered gross. :confused3

Me who loves my cats. Sometimes, I look at them and think how can I love them so much, but the presence a mouse or other animal freaks me out & I want it killed immediately.

"Meat" pies anyone? :rolleyes1

Meanwhile, in Iceland, a food official said his team had found a beef product which contained no meat at all.

Wow, finally a meat substitute found for vegetarians!

:rotfl2:

Certainly glad I don't eat any of this stuff so far. Years ago, we started having the butcher grind our beef on site. I rarely eat fast food burgers, mostly get fries and a shake. The pink stuff revealed by Jamie Oliver years ago stopped us from eating FF burgers.

I was vegetarian for 15 years before I went vegan. I loved cheese and thought going vegan would be to hard will all the dairy and eggs in everything. Then I did it and realized it wasn't nearly as hard as I thought. Sure I read labels and alot of processed food is out but I consider that a positive thing.

Since going vegan we eat wonderful fresh homemade meals. We really do eat delicious food with a much greater variety than anyone else I know. On our menu tonight: Boston baked beans cooked in my slow cooker, tofu scrambled burritos with sauteed onions, peppers, salsa and fresh cilanto and a fruit salad with pineapple, apple, banana and oranges spashed with lime juice. I was off today and even baked an apple pie. We'll eat that later when we have room in our bellies:thumbsup2

I didn't like the way battery hens where treated but I do like eggs so I now have 12 chickens (one due to be rehomed as he turned out to be a boy and the neighbours don't like him) and 4 3 week old chicks) so I know that the eggs I eat come from happy hens who potter round the garden eat bugs and worms and dustbath to their hearts content. The farm where i got the chicks also sells meat birds and will show you how to slaughter them so I will be doing the same with them and I will know my roast chicken was happy until the end.
