Ikea kitchen cabinets ?

wow! those cabinets look AMAZING about how much would you say the cost difference would be from Home Depot/Lowes etc?

We LOVE our Ikea cabinets! They really turned out great. We've had them for about 3 years now. With three kids, 2 dogs they take a beating and still look fantastic. I would definitely do it again. Just a funny side note...when my friend came over to see the new kitchen. I didn't tell her they were Ikea cabinets right away. After she came in and saw she said how did you afford the high end stuff? LMAO. When I told her they were Ikea she was floored. Fast forward one year...she now has an Ikea kitchen of her own:)

Ours were less than a third of the HD/Lowes prices for similar style cabinets. We spent about $6000 at Ikea, but that also included probably $1000 for sink, faucet, stove hood, etc not just the cabinets. (Fortunately, they were offering a sale at that time, so I believe we got 20% off everything.)

Our quotes from the other stores were about $18000 and some didn't include all the features that we got with the Ikea cabinets.

DH did a major renovation (opening a wall, raising the ceilings back to the original 10", new subfloor, etc) so honestly putting the cabinets together was nothing. However, even if you aren't "handy" I think it's still worth the effort for the savings. I have no skills in that area, but even I have never had any issues putting together any piece of Ikea furniture.

Here is my Ikea kitchen....love love the soft closing drawers and they clean up so easily:) Highly recommend! It was so affordable!

We've done 3 kitchens with IKEA cabs.
No problem building them, but we had a contractor install them.

My only tip about ikea cabs would be this.
The lower price cabs are laminated mdfs. So that means if you have a chip or something they are impossible to repair. You will have to replace the item.
So if you have kids or pets who might be rough on them, I would suggest looking at the higher priced cabs there.

Also, we used the STAT cabs for all 3 kitchens. Love the look but they do NOT stand against heat/moisture very well. We bought dishwasher with integrated door and both doors delaminated within 1 year.
The good thing is that Ikea has a 5yr warranty on their product, so we got replacements. But it was a pain to take them down and get them replaced and put them back up again.

Good luck!

Those of you who have had your cabinets awhile how do they hold up against kids, dogs, husbands, etc...? My family is very hard on things. I don't have a single door in my kitchen that doesn't have a chip or chunk out and hasn't had the front of the drawer screwed back on from it falling off of it and they are solid maple:sick:but came prefinished off white. They are 13yrs old and I've been begging for the last 5 for new ones.
We own a few Ikea dressers and they are junk the bottoms fall out, the fronts fall off, the drawers don't close properly. I vowed never to buy anything from Ikea with drawers. That said I absolutely love the look of their kitchen cabinets but I've always wondered how well they hold up.
Thanks!

we redid our entire kitchen with Ikea a couple of years ago...the cabinets are exactly the same as all other cainets...at 1/2 the price! (b/c you do it all yourself LOL) well worth it,my bro. who install high end stuff for a living says the interior stuff is exactly the same as what he installs. We opted for the solid beech wood, and I love them!(pantry cabinets =:lovestruc)
Consumer reports did a study on them a few years ago and recommended them also.

solid beech fronts have lasted quite nicely so far.....

Check out the GardenWeb site - specifically the kitchen forum. Lots of info on Ikea cabinets and also a great photo gallery for inspiration.

Ikea typically gets very good reviews and I know I have seen them in the past in Consumer Reports as well.

I have only had my Ikea kitchen for two years now so I can't really speak to longevity there...but I've had the dressers for over six years and have NEVER had any of the problems that you describe! Apologies in advance but that sounds like "user error" in putting them together.

I'm sorry about your dressers. I guess you got a bad lot or something. We have had 4 dressers, and 2 beds. They have held up beautifully through 3 moves. The last one was what did everything in. Moving every 3 yrs is hard on stuff :sad2:

I was watching this thread because we like to redo our houses. We like the kitchens from Ikea also.

how would I even begin? Is this possible if you don't live very close to a store? I have a very large kitchen with a gigantic island. I loved it when we moved in but now that it really needs an update it's terrifying. I would be fine keeping the layout exactly the same. Do they have a desk option?

We live about 4.5 hours away. We designed our kitchen online (they have a program on the website) and had a complete list of everything we needed. We showed up right when the store opened and sat down with someone in the kitchen dept. They pulled up our plan online, made sure it worked and we paid right there. DH and I rented a small uhaul trailer nearby that easily fit everything.

Two notes: 1. Check everything in your order as you load it. There were a few things missing from ours. Went back in and they just handed us the extra items. 2. Plan that you may need to make a second trip. We wound up with a few broken items (mostly ones that someone obviously took home, drilled wrong and brought back :sad2: ) We also decided to make one or two small changes to our design. So we did all the exchanging and extra items one day.

As others have mentioned, this is not my experience at all with our Ikea furniture. We added 3 bedrooms for our kids (now 14, 8, and 6) a few years ago and every item was purchased at Ikea (beds, dressers, wardrobes, shelves, etc). Everything still looks brand new and we have had no issues.

That said, we looked the items over in the store before purchasing. There were a few things that we liked online but when we saw in person we thought were poor quality and wouldn't hold up.

If you have the same items we do and yours are falling apart, I may have to agree with you that your family is really just too hard on things.

This is a very helpful thread, thank you! We have plans to renovate our kitchen (mostly in order to sell the house) and want to keep things as inexpensive as possible. Ikea was definitely something I was tossing around; glad to hear so many positive reviews!

I can't speak for the cabinets, but we just recently took down my daughter's wood IKEA loft bed - she had it for nine years and we moved once with it and it was still in great shape, she was just too old for it (just turned 18.)

I have the dressers where the bottoms fall out of the drawers too. So far it's only been the bottom drawer. These are on the least expensive dressers that they sell (about $80). I think my kids just over-stuffed them and it pushed the bottom out (which is really thin, and only held in place by slim grooves). I've fixed them several times and it just keeps happening. However, the fronts haven't fallen off.

We have an Ikea kitchen and I love it. We saved ALOT of money by going there. My sister who is a kitchen designer for a "pricey" designer company sends people to Ikea if they feel their prices are too steep heh.

Me too. Ours is over 4 hours away. DH and I have had many long Ikea days. We always try to get as much done each trip as we can. I always say it would be so nice to be able to just go to an Ikea like a regular shopping trip- look around a bit and buy one or two things.

No you don't. I live 5 minutes from an Ikea. We used to practically live there. Problem is that so did my paycheck! :rotfl:

But their store scares the life out of me. I'm a teacher, so fire drills are something pretty ingrained into my consciousness. Every single time I go to IKEA (and it's about 2 miles from here) I can't help but think: if there were ever a fire, it would be impossible to get out of this store!!!! It's like a rat's maze; there are no straight lines longer than about 50 feet long.

That said, I love those kitchen cabinets!

They are designed specifically to keep you in the store and take you to areas that you may not see, which forces you to look at everything. But there are exits all over the store, trust me, all over. But the store is not designed so that you can just walk to a section, it snakes for a reason. So don't be nervous, you can easily get out if there is a fire.
