Ikea Furniture Thoughts/Experiences

A question for those of you who have the Hemnes Daybed -- do you remember if the wooden slats came with the bed? If not, was there anything else you needed to purchase (the rail that goes down the center)?

The wooden slats were included. We didn't need to buy anything extra.

Almost all of our furniture is from Ikea. We're slowly replacing things as we need to, but generally we haven't needed to. I'd say our oldest Ikea pieces are about 15 years old now and still work just fine.

We have the Hemnes dresser, and the entire series is one of ikea's best too since its all wood.

we plan on replacing our malm dressers with them so they all match, but the malm dressers are almost 5 years old with no problems. we've even moved them twice without them falling apart between houses.

We have a queen size hemnes bed. I bought it at the end of my first year of teaching so it's over 10 years old now. It IS high-we actually have steps up to it for our basset hound. But it's extremely solid and looks brand new.

The pieces tend to be heavy because a lot of them are made of particle board with a thin veneer of wood.

I like Ikea for items that will get light use. Some pieces get better reviews than others, so google before you purchase. I would also advise that you sit on a chair or sofa before you buy it: don't just order it from the internet. Some of the seating pieces are pretty uncomfortable.

.

Most of their stuff is made from particle board- its cheap. If you want something cheap that you only need temporarily IKEA is the place to go. Its great for dorm rooms, first apartments, kids playrooms...I wouldn't furnish my home with it but for those other things its ok.

We have a king-size Hemnes, plus 3 dressers and 2 night stands. We bought them in 2005 and they've moved from VA to MA to PA with us over the past 8 years and are still in fantastic shape. We have dogs, a fat cat, and kids who jump on the bed all the time.

We have an IKEA couch (KARLANDA, maybe?) that we've had since 2003 and have moved 3 times. Still in great shape despite kids and pets.

It's not heirloom-quality stuff but it lasts more than a sufficient amount of time for the price.

Ikea has a wide range of furniture. Some of it is made from press board, and some from wood. The Hemnes line is solid wood, and I think a good value. I almost bought the Hemnes daybed for my 3 year old daughter.

The Ikea furniture that we have is wearing well. DD has a bunch of the solid pine Trofast pieces in her room, and I fully expect it to last forever, even though she sits and climbs on it frequently. We have a few of the Expedit shelving units too, and they still look new after 2 1/2 years. I have a leather Poang chair and footstool in my bedroom.

Some of the smaller tables and such I would not buy again but we have a Hemnes dresser that we got over 5 years ago for the kids and it is still in brand new condition. I LOVE that dresser and was going to get another one when I thought we were going to change the girls bedroom all around. And maybe I'm wierd but I find assembling IKEA furniture to be half the fun.

For those of you who have the Hemnes dresser/chest, do you feel it is necessary to anchor these pieces to the wall if small children will not be climbing on them. My 21 y/o daughter will be using these and would not open more than one drawer at a time; however, it will be sitting on new plush carpeting.

Nope. Not at all.

That's what I was hoping to hear. I'm not sure why everything says it should be fastened to the wall so it doesn't tip over. :thumbsup2

because of lawsuit happy stupid people. If it didnt' say that, they could potentially sue Ikea if something happens and say "well we didn't KNOW that it could tip over"

Another most our entire house is Ikea person here :) yes, even all the bathrooms. I think Ikea USED to have a reputation for cheaply made furniture but I feel that is no longer the case.

We have a Malm queen bed set in the guest BR. Our bed is a beautiful white leather king and we have nightstands with soft close drawers. Our bathroom vanities for 3 bathrooms are Ikea. I LOVE my Ikea kitchen. We also have sectional sofa, loveseat, 2 dining tables with chairs, barstools, rugs, linens Besta media cabinets, Hemnes tv stand with bookcases, glassware, vases, candles and kitchen appliances all from Ikea. Yes, our home looks like an Ikea showroom.:rotfl:

There must be something good about Ikea. Our home was on the market and we just recently sold it in 4 days.

The only thing I wouldn't recommend are the appliances. The furniture seems very sturdy though. Happy bday to your DD :goodvibes

If your floor is level then you shouldn't need to anchor it. I can tell you from experience though that a 2.5 year old trying to pull open the top drawer of an unanchored Hemnes dresser by herself will in fact cause said dresser to fall over on top of the 2.5 year old child. Still didn't anchor the thing though :rolleyes1.
