II exchange

Thanks. I might extend it into NH as well. So I have a better chance of taking a vacation next year!!! I'm a planner and I NEED to know what I'm doing. I guess I'll just have to adjust.

In the future planning more than a year out (or even close to 2) will improve your chances dramatically.

Not to take over, but I've been WL since May for anytime next summer (May-August) for the Escapes in Gulf Shores. I realize it's the beach in summer high season, but also hoped to get something quickly. For me, I had to put my points into trade due to a trip I had to cancel with borrowed points(got preggo). Anyway, I think I'm going to expand to include Gatlinburg as we'd have fun there as well. But, I hate not knowing and DH will have to put in for his week in January, so if we haven't had a match, I'll have to pick a week. I hate not being able to just know. Oh well. Wish I could just have the points back for Disney and be done!!

I'd expand your resorts as much as you can. For the general area you're already shooting for, add the Escapes in PC and IF you did 270 points (and not 160) add the Marriott in PC. If the deposit was for anything other than 160 or 270, it's almost certain you won't get anything and I'll explain why if it's applicable. While Legends Edge is not on the beach, it's a nice resort. If you're set on the beach, consider expanding to HH, MB, Daytona, West Palm and the mid and lower Gulf Coast. If you get to the time where your Husband has to pick a week, do so and alter your request accordingly. Consider a cash back up plan or make a DVC reservation for the same time frame. Realize that Escapes OB only has sunday check in and the one in PC only has Sat Check in. The Marriott has all 3 I believe.

I thought I did!! I made them at the end of summer since you can't book out more than one year - and I didn't really want to call every week to extend the search. I gave them a little over 2 months and 3 resort. I would have thought that would be enough!!!!

You can search 2 years out. IMO, anything after 1 year from the first week of travel is short notice with II and VERY short with RCI. Still, those months and 50 resorts wouldn't be great odds for summer using DVC to trade.

Does anyone know how far out Starwood allows deposits?
As an owner Tom would know better than I. I know HI tends to bulk spacebank right at a year out or just under often times.

Yes, but alot of those weeks are in the fall, January and May.
Best times to go if you aren't tied to school calendars. I'd venture that those are the majority of their deposits as well.

What exactly are you looking for? It depends on the resort and season you are inquiring about.

None of them deposit more then a year out.

I put in a request for Harborside Atlantis which I know is hard to get but I put in the request for April-May 2010! I asked for a 2 bedroom but will probably change it to 1 or 2 bedroom. I'm guessing I have plenty of time to make the addition to the waitlist request (even though my family already thinks I'm nuts for even going on the waitlist now).

Thanks for the responses - Tom, I read your posts on tug too (recently started reading there, haven't signed up yet).

Easter in 2010 is April 4th. You can pretty much not count on not getting the week before and after Easter. May is your best bet.

Since you put in a request for a two bedroom, did they take 270 points from you? If you get a one bedroom, do they give you back the difference in points?

I told MS I'm open to go anytime from the 2nd week of April - all of May. They don't take any points until a match is confirmed so all my points are currently intact. If I get the 1 bedroom they'll deduct the 160 points, for the 2 bedroom they'll take the 270.

Tom, they don't take the points until you match but if you request a 2 BR and accept a 1 BR, you pay the 1 BR cost. Fortunately the reverse is not true, if you request a 1 BR and the LATER offer you a 2 BR, you still pay only the 1 BR cost. The exception is with an instant exchange. If you call today and ask for a 1 BR and they only have a 2 BR, you'll pay the 2 BR cost if you accept it. The trick in that case is to immediately place the 1 BR request and hope they later (like that evening) confirm you to the 2 BR that was available.

Ah...I only work the trades in, not out of DVC. But, I should know this stuff too.

When do you pay a fee, when requesting or when a match is found?

You now pay the fee upfront and it's "nonrefunable" which means if you match, it's gone but if you cancel prior to a match or don't match, you get your money back. In years past you paid the fee and had the chance to say yes or no when the trade was found but they had a lot of people who changed their minds and backed out so they felt this change would weed out the tire kickers. There is one resort system where getting upgraded to a 2 BR is very likely, the Royal Resorts. My concern with requesting a trade through DVC for Atlantis is the same as it is for any resort that has larger and smaller 1 BR units, namely that there's no way to know which you're getting until after the fact and in every situation I am aware of, it would determine whether I would accept the exchange or not. At least with II and RCI directly you can match, investigate the unit type, then cancel without penalty if you need to including getting your week back on a request first exchange. Unfortunately that does not appear to be the case with DVC.

This is good to know.

And the difference at Atlantis between a one bedroom deluxe and a one bedroom premium is huge.

Exactly. This is just another of many reasons why one needs to do independent investigations of the resorts on your exchange list. Factors that might be a negative for some resorts include:
  • The way units are assigned and generally how exchangers are treated. There is a resort system with RCI that actually often puts exchangers in a different and lessor resort.
  • Specifics of the resort location, ex. Kona Coast in HI is not on a beach, some resorts are an hour or more from anywhere.
  • Unit occupancy, for trade purposes it's only 2 for a studio, 4 for a 1 BR and 6 for a 2 BR. For example, some resorts have sleep 6 and sleep 8 2 BR units but you can't specify which for an ongoing search.
  • Resort Quality - one 5* is not the same as another, there can be as big a difference as from Chevy to BMW.
  • Restaurants including how good they are (and how expensive since we're talking Atlantis and the $20 plus hamburger).
  • Refurbishment schedules, activities and the like.
Of course one can't get every piece of info but it's certainly better to get what you can and thus make a far more informed decision. That's one of the reasons I am not a fan of trading DVC. I always try to make each trade an uptrade so that if I get a so so unit or have some other issue or even have to cancel short noticce, I don't feel like it cost me so much. There aren't that many resort options that are uptrades with DVC though there are a few.

I forgot to mention that at Atlantis there are two different bedroom units also. One of them sleeps 6, the other sleeps 8.
