Is there any rhyme or reason to when DCL offers these rates? We are booking 10/22/16 on the Fantasy but are trying to hold out in case we can get a VGT for less. Both cruises before and after already have GTY rates out and it's now less than 9 weeks away. There are currently category GTY rates and it looks like it's about 65% full according to cruisefish. Just wondering if I'm waiting for nothing.

I am newer to cruising so I can't help you with that but I was wondering how you can see how full the ship is? I checked out cruise fish but didn't see that option. We are booked on a GTY in November and there seems to be a lot of discounts for our cruise date. Thanks!

Can you go 10/15 or 10/31? Both these sailings on the Fantasy have released really good GT rates for inside, oceanview and verandah.
My guess and it's just a guess that o
10/22 won't have them because the other dates have been released for 2-3 weeks already. They may release only OGT or something in the next week but I don't know if all 3.

When categories go to GTY, that means that there are only a few staterooms left in that category. You book at the current pricing with no discount and you don't get to pick your stateroom. If you are seeing many categories in GTY status, it is less likely that there will be *GT rates offered for the cruise. The Fantasy cruises that currently have *GT rates are Western Caribbean cruises. I don't know if Eastern vs. Western has anything to do with the lack of discounts or not.

I would think, if *GT discounts are going to be offered, they would be in the next week or two. I closest I have had a discount appear for a cruise I wanted was about 30 days out. That was a few years ago.

*GT rates are offered on those cruises that DCL deems as not selling well. No way of knowing what cruises they may come out on.

I will point out that GTY is not the same as *GT. Once a certain percentage of rooms within a specific category have been "sold" the category goes GTY. That means you can still select that category, but you cannot select a specific room. GTY rates are the same as if you were able to select a specific room. *GT rates typically come out after the Paid In Full date and you book a TYPE of room, not a category.

I'll also point out that cruisefish is a little obscure about how many rooms are still available. When it shows 65% availability, it means that 65% of the CATEGORIES are available, not rooms. As long as at least one room within a category is available, that category is considered 100% available. It's quite likely for there to be fewer rooms available with 65% availability than there are with 20% availability.

Cruise Fish does not show you the actual percentage full of the cruise ship. The percentages you see are the percent of categories still available, not cabins. There could be only one or two cabins available in each category or many. There is no way to tell for sure, but if DCL is showing lots of the remaining categories in GTY status, it's a good indication this cruise is getting full.

Unfortunately, we are stuck with that week due to school break.

If they don't offer *GT tomorrow, I'm thinking we should transfer our Alaska 2017 to this Oct and book the Alaska onboard this time. That way we can use 10% for both. Right now cruisefish says 35% next to this cruise so I figured 65% was sold. I understand now though...I'm just thinking they would've released *GT rates when they offered FL and military discounts a few weeks ago.

So right now it has 35% next to the cruise I'm looking at...that doesn't mean 65% of the cruise is filled? Thanks for explaining!!

Take a look at the replies, these lovely DISers have explained it. I was mistaken thinking it was a percentage full/empty ship.

Thank you, that makes total sense!

It is a very common mistake :-) - one that a lot people make when they first check out that website. The details are buried deep within the FAQ section of cruise fish (or you find out from someone on the Dis just as I did :flower1:)
