The pics with the family on the beach I would say it was taken at Discovery Island I bet just to the left of them is the ship wreck

Also for TCD notice the white sails on the boats.

Yes. I do see the white sails. Good catch. That pretty much confirms what was in the background of the earlier DI photo.

I don't think that campsite is in the 1400 loop. If it was, I don't think the woods would be as thick on the other side of the canal. We would be looking at the 600 loop or 500 loop campsites. I think this is a staged photo, where they backed an RV up to canal by maybe the 1600 or 1800 loop. The other side the canal still looks like that today.

I think the beach is the River Country beach. You can see the Contemporary resort clearly from there. I think it would look a lot closer if this was taken from DI

Wow! Thanks for posting those scans. You even have the envelope with $ .15 postage on it!

I noticed something new on the 1978 map.

Trail Blaze Corral is out by the overflow parking lot, to the East of the Kennel.

I never saw it located here before.

There were some maps already posted on this thread showing Trail Blaze Corral more toward the four way stop- near where the hitch-unhitch area is today.

Also, the map has a close up detail of the Settlement Bus stop area. It is interesting to me that Big Pine Drive is shown as not connected to West Wilderness Road. Also note that there was a bus to the Magic Kingdom. No mention of boat transportation.

And look at the price for a site in the 200 loop!

What is a 23 foot motorhome w/etheridge?

Etheridge?

What the heck is an Etheridge?

Does this have anything to do with Melissa Etheridge? :confused3

Interesting!

That is the family we always travel with, 30 + years. Over the years we had up to 6 familys in their mini homes caravaning down from Michigan every Spring, alas now it is down to the first two families that started all this madness.

Ah ha!

Thanks for clearing that up.

I was trying to figure out what an Etheridge was. I was thinking it was some kind of awning or something.

Do you have any photos from any of those trips over the years?

That is pretty cool that you have been visiting for thirty years.

Interesting.

While this looks like a photo, it is clearly some type of artist's rendering.

Look at the resort sitting where the Grand Floridian is currently located.

That is not the Grand Floridian, and that resort did not open until the late 80's, anyway.

And, there is also a resort across the Seven Seas Lagoon that you can see to the right of the Contemporary.

These resorts were on the drawing board initially.

I believe one was supposed to be Venetian themed, and the other Mediterranean (or maybe that is the same resort I'm thinking of- isn't Venice on the Mediterranean?).

Anyway, the Grand Floridian replaced whatever was initially planned for the spot where it now sits.

The other resort apparently will never be built because the ground there is not suitable for construction.

I was wondering about that. Thanks for the info!

I came across a gem on the Progress City website.

It is a 1987 preview video hosted by good old Regis.

Only he isn't quite so old in this video.

Anyway, it is amazing to see everything that was in the works in 1987.

It's no wonder that is about when the Fort began to fall into disrepair.

Check it out:

The resort where the GF is now was supposed to have been the Asian resort.

There was also a Persian resort planned for the shores of Bay Lake to the left (from the photo's perspective) of the Contemporary.

It's kind of sad that these were never built, but we probably wouldn't have had the resorts by Epcot had these been built.

I found some more information about the planned, but unbuilt, resorts here:

Here are a couple of interesting drawings from that site:

This one shows the Resorts that I pointed out from DisCamper's post.

This one is interesting too.

There was once a resort planned for where the monorail terminal is.

Look at this drawing:

4cdc36c0.jpg

This would have been in the far corner of Bay Lake. And would have had a Persian theme.

I think you can actually see something over there in the photo Discamper posted, above.

ETA: I must have been typing this when NJRRK posted. The Persian resort mentioned is the one in the second picture.

ETA #2: I also meant to point out in the first photo- look at the area where Space Mountain is now. Space Mountain was not in the MK when it opened. It looks like something else was planned for that space.

Once again DC...great pic! I vaguely remember the trams, but don't think we've got a pic.
