If your DD is in high school band or choir

Got mine at K-Mart for high school and college choir. I've also seen them at Walmart.

Ours is pretty reasonable. For orchestra and chorus the girls have to wear a black skirt (no specific length) or slacks and a white top. No specific styles are required, which I greatly appreciate.

Kohl's and JC Penney's often have basic black skirts in the misses section, I'd imagine they'd have some in petits too. You may have to get out of the teen section and look at the "old lady clothes"

My first year in High School choir we had to wear a white dress shirt and black dress pants, and the school provided a red cumberbund. Fortunatly black pants are always easy to find. Sophmore thru Senior year I was in the upper level choir and we had choir robes, so we could wear anything we wanted as long as we had dress shoes on our feet. The guys acutally had it worse, they still had to wear a white shirt and a tie so the collar would show over the neck of the robe, and dress slacks as of course their legs were visable. At least the color was flexable on the pants!

Oh, do your daughter a favor and have her wear flats if they are doing more than two songs. I made the mistake of always wearing pumps and by the middle of the second song I could no longer feel my toes. Getting down off the riser when the preformance was over was an adventure!

Our school do not require the girls to wear skirts, it was challenged a few years back as "sexist" since the boys can wear pants so girls can wear pants or a skirt-their choice.

in highschool it was always long black skirts with some identical to everyone else's (and very plain/unornated) white or cream blouses-until the year our choir director got fed up with all the complaints about how the lights would reflect off the white/cream blouses and total wash out the faces of the singers-the next year he chose a black, gray and white floral patterned fabric for our blouses. we retained those blouses until a high profile choir competition where a judge wrote in his comments 'blouses look like they were made from casket lining'

the next year it was back to plain white/cream


it was routine in choir for the graduating seniors or those who did'nt plan on being in the following year to donate their skirts to a choir box so the newbies did'nt have to try and find their own (no one had any use for a black choir skirt otherwise).

I will say that it is INCREDIBLY expensive for band boosters to purchase uniforms. Maybe you all can look into organizing fundraisers for kids so they can buy uniforms for next year...that's what we did at my high school.

Don't you wish they'd tell you this at the beginning of the year? I just found out today that the Men's Ensemble singing group at DS's middle school requires a black button-down collar dress shirt and green tie and the concert is next week. Fortunately the band only requires a white shirt and black dress pants/skirt. They also ask for black dress shoes, but I've seen some of the girls show up in flip flops and the director doesn't say anything.

Thanks for the laugh this morning! I think the biggest problem is that dd wears a girls size 14. The first concert is in 2 weeks so I really don't have time to go custom when you figure in the Thanksgiving holiday. I did order 2 online and 1 has already shipped. I might bring the situation up at the next band boosters and look for a supplier for the skirts. The girls could all order their skirts through the same company. I like the idea of the donation box at the end of high school. I think parents prefer paying to have someone do all the work for them. I also have a dd11 so I'll be involved in the music groups for years.

Teachers asking parents to purchase something that can't be found is a big pet peeve of mine. It happens at the beginning of every school year. Last year we were told to purchase a 2.5" maroon binder for a class. There were none to be found. Another year we had to buy college ruled, black composition notebooks without spirals. I went to 4 stores before telling dd she would have to use wide ruled. Teachers, please "shop" your lists before handing them out!
