For all the headaches and frustrations our kids give us, sometimes we need to see how truly awesome they can be!
Yesterday I took my 11 y.o. DD and a couple of other kids from school to the local soup kitchen. They do this every month (the kids take turns because so many signed up to help!) and it was finally our turn. I thought they'd be scared or shy or even maybe a little turned off by the clothes and appearance of the clients. They were great. They were polite, they joked with the people, they were suprisingly very helpful and they did their job with great pride. It was a really beautiful thing.
Fast forward to today. My DD comes home off the bus in tears. After finally calming her down, I finally got out that she was mad at the kids on her bus because they keep picking on one of their classmates. I'm proud to say that she told them to knock it off and of course, they turned on her and started picking on her (rolls off her back). She can't understand why they would be so mean to this little boy and she feels so bad for him that he doesn't have any friends. She's going to ask him if he wants to play basketball with them tomorrow. How proud can one mom be?
I never would have had the courage to go "against the group" when I was a kid. I'm kinda proud of myself for raising this spunky, confident kid. Yep, the road is going to get mighty bumpy in the next few years. But for today, it's smooth sailing.
