Strictly hypothetical, of course....

If you were to start over.... newly single. With 2 racially/ability diverse children.....
Where would you live? Where would you go? What would be your dream?

Just curious....

Well that's a strange hypothetical . . . but I I won't pry.

I would go to Hawaii. I love Hawaii, I think I would live on the big island. Sure island fever would set in after a while, but a while after that I think I could learn to be content and find ways to keep busy that I like. I would paint more, bike more, take photos, it would be awesome.

London, UK

The culture and natural diversity throughout Europe and espicially the UK would be all the reason I would need.

Hmm. I might just stay here. Dallas is racially diverse (although the races aren't always harmonious, so maybe there would be somewhere better for that). I am too much of a weenie to live where it gets cold, so I wouldn't go north. Dallas has outstanding medical facilities for children so that would be a huge plus. It is expensive here and the schools aren't very good though, so maybe some more research would be necessary.

If we leave here (with our typically abled, racially homogenous child) we will go to Florida. Yeah, we may be swept away by a hurricane, but you take the good with the bad. ;)

Ok.... in this senario..... money is an issue. 2 kids..... not much money. Need to make a living and be able to live...!

Well, Buffalo has a low cost of living and we've got Niagara Falls & Canada is just a couple minutes away. Most of the year the weather is great but I admit that I hate cold and snow (and we get both)! Have you thought about focusing your search based on programs and health care for the kids? Or how about looking for an area where you can get a job in your line of work?

Hmmmmm.. I live in MA... we love to call it Taxachusetts, although fairly liberal state, very expensive to live, I think..

I like VA.....not sure how expensive it is to live, but I do like it there.. We visit when we can..

California is pretty diverse, lovely climate most of the time. Expensive, though.

Hypothetically, I would hope that it would never come down to this for you or anyone else. To be in a place where you are responsible for one special needs child for the rest of his/her life is not a place to be be in as a solo, if at all possible. To be in a place where you possibly have one on the way, is not a place where you want to be doing it solo. To be fostering kids that need medical care is not a place that you want to be doing it solo with the other two/three kids in tow.

I am really hoping that this is honestly hypothetical because if it isn't, it's incredibly sad for the kids involved. Parenting is not a hobby.

No money: I would stick to the US, especially somewhere near family.

Money: Move to San Sebastian (northern Spain) and open a bookstore there. It's 45 mins to France or to Bilbao, what else can one ask for!

EEEEEWWWW... (King Louie, cover your ears/eyes, Sweetie)...

Pollution...Cars...Cars...Pollution...Fake ****s***...Cars...Cars...La Migra (Well -- to be honest, we got them here too)...Designer Salads...Cars...Cars...

Waiting in line to check into a hotel while traveling for business in LA, I once actually saw a highly indignant indivijuel chewing-out <BITTERLY> the front desk staff for having the wrong kinda bottled water in the room...:sad2:

Did I mention all the dang cars? :rotfl2:

To answer MKIT's original question: anywhere near friends/family.

Having grown up in the Midwest....it would probably be there. (Ohio, Indiana, Wisconsin)

Quite honestly, recently I drove from Bloomington IN to Indy. I swear, if I would have passed a "for rent" sign I dont know if I would have come home.

Now that was two weeks ago, in August. I dont think I would feel the same way in December!

I really think, in a few years, I could play the "snow bird" game....

I don't get why they call us taxachusetts......there are far worse states for taxes, Pennsylvania, Vermont, New Jersey, to name a few.
anyway, it is expensive to live here though, housing, cost of living, etc, but the taxes are not as bad as some places in my opinion.

Well, I'd probably recommend Ottawa, ON -- Canada's capital. It's gorgeous, fairly racially diverse, lots of outdoor activities, good medical care, decent standard of living with average salaries, etc. Of course, I'm Canadian so I may be biased.

Do you have a specific line of work that you'd be trying to find work in?
