If you wear an engagement ring…

My ring is kind of an interesting story. One of my grandfathers was a jeweler, so I know DH felt some pressure. We also had a few friends get engaged just before he proposed, so he asked me what I thought of their rings and what would have been better for me. We also had the benefit of being a little bit older, but pre-kids. So, finances were different. I said a wanted either a pear, asscher, or oval diamond...side stones-preferably baguettes maybe even alternating with rounds or marquise stones...white gold or platinum (my skin is sensitive)...and something just different/interesting.

He proposed with a pear shaped diamond in a white gold mounting head on a plain yellow gold band...with a promise to shop together for the right setting. When we went to the jeweler, I wasn't finding anything, but somehow he found something that was utterly perfect. It had tapered baguettes on each side, a band that was a blend of an antique looking rope and wheat pattern in white gold, and the stones were separated from the band section with little pieces of yellow gold. It looked like nobody else's ring. When it came time to find a matching wedding band, the jeweler had nothing and quoted us something crazy to work from scratch. I found a nearly identical mounting online in all white gold (and smaller side stones) for a really reasonable price. I had to find a different jeweler willing to be honest and take on the project, but the one who did the work took out the center mounting head of my online find and mounted a straight baguette in the center in some of the yellow gold from the pear stone's original setting...so I could always have a bit of that original engagement setting with me. Unfortunately, due to some health issues and weight gain...I haven't been able to wear it in a while. I often just wore the band anyway and kept the main ring locked up. I still LOVE my ring. Love the guy a whole lot more...but the ring always makes me smile.

Very unique ring!

I have a beautiful 3/4 carat diamond solitaire. We also had no money when we married, but I got my beautiful ring on our 5th anniversary. I was working with someone whose dad worked in diamonds in New York and he picked it out for me special. I used to wear it all the time (except for when doing dishes), but then one of the prongs broke. So now it sits in a baggie locked up lol. I do need to get it fixed!

My husband picked out my 1/2 carat solitaire. He went to the jeweler and told them I’m not fancy. 😂
The diamond is high quality and still shines 30 years later. I picked out the band with the channel set diamonds. The 2 rings are soldered together.
I wear my rings every day. Never take them off, except when I bake and knead something by hand.

I have the same channel set wedding band! Mine is also soldered to my engagement ring but my engagement ring is a princess cut solitaire.

Wear mine everyday , don’t take it off unless I’m baking or gardening.

If I took the diamond off it would look funny since the wedding band is the thin band on the bottom that that has a dip for the diamond to sit.

Husband got it for me, it will be 30 years in a couple months.,View attachment 887006
Very similar to mine from 1994 :) Same cut with a ‘wave’ ring style.

We went and chose mine together. I picked a 1/4 carat marquis with tiny channel set diamonds on the band. It was the era of ‘double your salary’ advertising so my DH was pretty surprised (and relieved) with my modest pick. I never took my rings off until about halfway through my pregnancy with older DD. When she was a year old I got tired of not being able to wear my rings so had them sized up and in the process my diamond was switched. I couldn’t prove it but I had the paperwork for the original and “upgraded” to 1/3 carat. I wore it and my 10 year upgraded wedding band fairly regularly until pregnant 10 years later with my twins. I never had any of my rings sized back down so they’re too big and I only wear them for special occasions with a smaller ring in front so I don’t lose them.

Nowadays I just wear my 25 year anniversary band.

Mine’s a simple solitaire in white gold, round cut. We picked it out together—it just felt right, classic but not too flashy. I do wear it on vacation, but I’m always super careful with it! Still love it as much as the day I got it. How about yours?

I usually bring mine on vacation unless we are doing an outdoorsy or beach vacation. In that case, I’ll just leave them locked up at home and wear a silicone ring. I haven’t worn mine at all in about 6 months though. Even though I lost weight overall while doing chemo, my fingers are too puffy right now for them to fit.

This is the only picture I can find from when we added a band for our 10th anniversary

I wore my 1/4 carat round solitaire diamond on a yellow gold band all the time for 27 years, until the day the diamond fell out. Never found it, and I miss it every day. It was a sparkler, and I just loved it.
Wow...we have had the almost exact same ring and experience.

1/4 carat round solitaire, yellow gold....and it was probably close to around 27 years when the diamond fell out. It was small, but she loved it. Sad we were never able to track it down.

Now we're at 31.5 years and think about replacing it, but that one had the sentimental value we can't get back, and she doesn't care much about a new diamond. She would rather use money doing things like vacation together.

Mine's just over 1/4 carat - yellow gold, because that's what I wore all the time 35 years ago. I still wear it every day, and still like the oval. Since then, I mostly wear silver. Over the years, I've thought about getting it rhodium-plated, but meh. DH still wears his wedding ring every day as well.

Love a classic look! Mine is white gold, princess cut.

Most days I forget to put my ring on because we have a farm and do chores in the morning and afternoon. My engagement ring is in the safe. If I wear a ring at all it's my wedding band.

I don't have an engagement ring, just a wedding band and that's because my husband and I never intended on getting married.

I was previously married and decided that I didn't want to go down that road again. He always believed marriage was more of a formality. What changed was when our daughter was born, we had a change of heart.

My ring is a tungsten band with an inside joke engraved on the inside of the band. His is similar to mine. And for two people who didn't want to get married, we're going to be celebrating our 18th anniversary in a few weeks.

This set is beautiful!

My original engagement ring was a custom made 4 carat topaz surrounded by pink sapphires set in white gold with a thin wedding band. Later my husband got me a thicker yellow gold band and gave me a 1 carat ruby ring surrounded by diamonds as a gift for the birth of our daughter. I wore both on and off over the years. For our 25th anniversary, he gave me a 2.7 carat 5 stone diamind ring set in platinum that I wore daily til he passed away with a slim diamond eternity band. Now I wear the original white gold wedding band with the diamond band. I also wear a fake 2 carat asscher cut solitaire diamond when I travel. When, what would have been our 50th wedding anniversary comes around (2030), if I’m still around, I’ll probably get myself a real 2 ct asscher to wear since that’s what would have been my gift from my dear dear husband…

I have a bad history with engagement rings.
>Original ring was an estate piece, a 3/4 carat amethyst with two diamond chips on each side. DD bought it from my sister's consignment shop for a song, and hadn't intended it to be the engagement ring but that's how it worked out (I got pregnant so we "got engaged" pretty quickly). I stopped wearing it for a while when we bought our "real" rings. I lost that when I took it off to change at an event; I'd been setting up the event and took of the ring to put on pantyhose when dressing up for the evening and never saw it again.
>Second ring we picked out after we were married. It was a 1/2 carat diamond with small ruby side stones and a plain gold wedding band. I took it off one summer when I was about 5 months pregnant (not with DD) and put it in my shorts pocket and never saw it again.
>Third ring was three garnets with two diamond chips on the outside of the side stones. The center stone was bigger than the other two and it wore down faster. Then one of the side stones fell out and was lost. The jeweler said it'd cost more to replace the stones than it was worth. I still have what's left of it.
>Fourth ring was a random, wavy cluster of 12 small white sapphires (of differing sizes). Two of the sapphires have fallen out and we haven't bothered to replace them. The setting has a lot of prongs that catch on my sweaters, but I still have it.

These days I either wear my Mickey costume ring (below- which is starting to turn my finger a little green) or a silver sort-of filigree band my sister gave me for my birthday.

I'm on my third engagement ring. Technically I bought the first one with a certificate I won to a jewelry store. You needed a magnifying glass to see the diamond. That one got sucked up by the vacuum cleaner. My husband decided to "propose" again. I was putting groceries away and he gave me the ring while my hands were holding frozen vegies. That one was destroyed by the garbage disposal. I had taken the rings off to make hamburgers and the cat knocked it down the disposal. I am now on my third ring. It's a simple 1/4 carat round diamond. It pairs well with my new wedding band. The original was stolen by one of my son's friends. We knew it was missing but thought the cats had knocked it under the bed or into the closet. The friend confessed after several months, he pawned it for drug money. Needless to say he didn't stay a friend after that.

My husband lost at least 3 wedding rings. Two were stolen and the last one fell off his finger when he was walking the dog. He looked everywhere in the location he dropped it but never found it.

My daughter got married almost 10 years ago but she didn't want an engagement ring or wedding ring. She bought a very expensive vacuum cleaner instead. My other daughter lost her engagement a few years ago. We are not very lucky with rings. I do have my great grandmothers engagement ring, I would love to get it reset but I'm afraid to do anything with it because of my history of losing rings.
