...would you take on hefty payments to get something new?

I've about had it with my living room furniture. It doesn't go with the walls or carpet, it's falling apart...

No.

If you absolutely need something else, buy used.

Edited to add, that is if you couldn't afford the hefty payments.

Depends if I could pay for it. If I could afford it, yes.

If not, then I would find furniture that does not require hefty payments!

You could always go to a discount store. You never know what you'll find.

A co-worker of my brother's told him about the deal he got on his living room furniture set. He was at Haynes about to make a purchase for a lot of $$$ but he saw something wrong with it. They didn't have a replacement. The saleman told him to go to Big Lots and look for it. Haynes sells them the peices they want to move and that may have some scratch and dents. He did. He found the set at a fraction of what he was going to pay --- nothing wrong with any of it!

Nope, I prefer trying to keep credit use to a minimum. It's taken us too many years to count but we finally have a nice dining room and ALMOST gotten all good living room furniture... almost.... we were able to get some good deals at some auctions which helped.

Maybe you should read the thread about the person who has $32,000 in credit card bills before you consider the "hefty" payments this new furniture would incur!! ;)

If your furniture is truly falling apart, and you need new couches..why don't you check out Sam's or Costco & compare prices with some furniture store prices. You don't have to buy high end furniture for it to look nice (but you may get high end furniture at Sam's or Costco's for the same price as low end furniture at a furniture store!) Just something to think about!

My Mother just finished our window treatments and DH and I just got married 6 mos ago, so funds are limited to HAVE to haves for the most part. But My Mom was at an auction this weekend for an estate sale and a closing of a nice bed and breakfast and she found a beautiful raspberry velvet wingback to cooridinate with my drapes- they wanted to sell 2 (blue and rasp.) for $840 and she got one for $80!

Look for flea markets in your area, nows the time they start opening up for the spring and summer. Also, check the paper for folks who have to sell practically new because they are moving.

Antique shopping is another place to look too. You dont have to go to Ethan Allen and sign on a dotted line for good furniture- only if you want to. Sooooo many fun alternatives!:Pinkbounc

is it repairable? can you do ANYTHING with it? Thinks Trading Spaces but not Hildie ;)

If you have an IKEA anywhere near you, I can't stress enough that you should check it out.

I can't help with the falling apart aspect, but an inexpensive slipcover does wonders for couches. Surefit has a ton of selections on their website, and they often sell at a slightly discounted rate on eBay.

I wouldn't go into debt for furniture, but I have a furniture slush fund that I built up over the last year. I might have bought the furniture already if we weren't moving!

I hated my furniture for 8 years (DH bought it before we started dating, we gave away most of my stuff), but I only bought a new living room set this past weekend. If I can't pay cash, I don't get it.

Then again, I'd probably still be waiting on furniture until my move, but there's this great little furniture company about an hour away. We were on our way to IKEA to get a bookshelf and I said to DH we should stop in and see what they have...I got a nice leather sofa, loveseat and chair for about 60% less than the furniture chains sell it for.

Don't do the credit unless absolutely necessary...if you have IKEA, they are an excellent alternative. All the bedroom stuff in my house and bookshelves came from there!

American Siganture has gorgeous furniture, and it fairly inexpensive (our living room set is from there, and under $1000).

I will fourth the Ikea idea. Also, I will second the "Trading Spaces" idea! Frequently check the $1/yd and $2/yd fabric tables at your local Walmart. I was able to get a nice, yellow, really heavy duty fabric, about 20 yards, for $1/yd one time, and then last fall I got about 17 yards of upholstery weight plain beige fabric for $2/yd. Find a friend who can help if you don't know how to sew and make yourself some slip covers. I have ordered from SureFit Slipcovers without success. THe sofa and chair I was trying to recover were wingback style and none of their covers would fit. And while it is cheaper than a new sofa, they are still expensive for what they are.

Don't go into debt for furniture if you don't have to.... it is not worth it in the long run.......................P

No. I don't believe in going into debt for furniture. Go to Walmart/Target or your local dept store & get some sofa covers you can live with until you can get what you really want.
