If you have more than one cat...

how do you keep their litter box odor-free?

If you have more than one cat, one box is not enough. You need at least one box per cat, and you need to empty them at least once per day. I usually put baking soda sprinkled over the litter each time I scoop. And I completely empty the box and replace it with new clumping litter once a week.

Omg really? I just scoop every day and add more when I need it. I used to use non clumping kind and then I would empty the box ever week, but with the clumping stuff I haven't changed it in 2 months and it doesn't smell.

Ditto here. I've never noted any significant difference between day-old and month-old clumping litter. As long as you scoop it conscientiously, once they've gone in it once it's the same as if they've gone in it a dozen times, in my experience.

We use Arm & Hammer. We try our best to avoid scented or baking soda infused litter.

I don't know if this is an option for you, but we actually have an automatic literbox that does absolutely wonderful in controlling those odors, but you do have to keep an eye on the liter tray to empty it within a good time frame, or the odors do build up.

We have had The Littermaid Elite, which was good but it shorted out after about a year. We've also had the Scoopfree Litterbox but I don't have good luck with crystal litter.

The one we've had awesome success for is the Litter Robot. It's a bit more expensive, but we've had it for several years no absolutely no problems!

What I meant by "train" was that our cats used to use a litter box inside so we kept moving it closer to the cat door and then finally right outside the cat door. Pretty soon they only went outside and didn't look for an indoor cat box any longer

Ah - we didn't even do that. We just put clean litter in and let him out. He never even considered using the litter tray ever again :rotfl:

That said, he did pee in it the day we got the kitten - just to make a point :teacher:

Here, we only have one litter box since our house is so small. Our two cats do just fine with one box, except for the fact that they like to try to go to the bathroom at the same time. We use Tidy Cats for multiple cat households, and one of us will scoop every day, replace all the litter once a week, and 2-3 times a month we'll take the littler box outside, hose it down and bleach it, then let it dry and refill it. One thing that's helped with the smell is changing our cats to a digestive care food, we use the Iams brand and it's REALLY helped.
