If you had to spend 15 dollars..

I thought of a fun hypothetical for people. People do this all the time but with players in sports, thought it might be fun to do with DVC resorts :P

Assume you have 15 dollars to spend, each time you buy gets you 150 points. i.e. if you spend 5 dollars on VGC, you get 150 VGC points. Dues are exactly as how they are today. However, in this fantasy world, each contract lasts 50 years starting from today. I'm generous so you can buy the same home resort twice meaning you can only have a maximum of 300 points at a single home resort. How would you spend your 15 dollars? Also explain your reasoning :)

$5 VGC, BWV, BCV
$4 VGF, PVB, RIV, VDH
$3 CCV, BRV, BLT
$2 AKV, SSR, CFW, OKW, AUL
$1 VB, HHI

$5 on VGC = 150 pts, for me that would be two mini trips a year
$5 on BWV = 150 pts, 1 trip a year- March/April Flower and Garden
$3 on BRV = 150 pts, 1 trip a year- December holiday decor
$2 on AUL = 150 pts, 1 trip a year

Now the only problem would be getting that much vacation time off and the flight costs

$8-VGF-300 pts-this is our home away from home and would allow us to upgrade to a 2bdrm for 12 nights in the summer
$4-PVB-150 pts-this could move our every other year Thanks giving trip into a Spring Break yearly in a 1 bedroom
$3-CCV-150pts- we could do our Thanksgiving trips at CCV every year in a 2bedroom and have more space and have DS and DDiL stay with us. Then they could use their points to stay at their resort when we go in either the summer or Spring Break.

If this was as if I had no points and had to start fresh it would be the same break down, only because I cannot buy more at VGF.

For me I think I'd do

$5 BCV
$4 RIV
$2 AUL
$4 PVB

Simply because these are the resorts we love. I would consider BW instead of BCV but I like having the 2BRs being dedicated even if it means losing the grand villa.

We currently own at VGF, RIV and AUL in real life, but in this hypothetical I think I would do the following:

$8 VGF (love the resort, low annual dues and 300 points at a high points chart would still allow for villa booking at the 11 month window)

$4 RIV (while I would love to say BCV, as a family of 5 (and not a studio family) we need an EPCOT resort that sleeps 5 in a one-bedroom. RIV fits the bill and turns out we adore this resort and think it has one of the best splash pads on property. Also annual dues are right in the middle of the road for the most part.)

$2 AUL (Aulani is what started my DVC journey and I think it’s the best resort and even with high flight prices and dues, we could bank, use and borrow for a nice stay every 3 years).

$1 HHI (the dues are killer, but my DW’s parents have a place near Hilton Head and we love the area and the point chart is quite favorable).

So turns out that I’d still lean towards the same resorts! This just reminds me that I can’t get over the fact that BWV, BCV, CCV and BRV only sleep 4 in a one-bedroom, even though all but CCV sleep 5 in a deluxe studio, so those resorts were eliminated from consideration since we are a family of 5 and need the “extra” room. And VDH is out because the general lack of villas is still quite perplexing along with just making the studios accommodate 4. Don’t feel like fighting at the 11-month mark for a one-bedroom in real life or this hypothetical. VGC was tempting, but we’ve never been…yet. We have a stay set for early June this year (that I snagged by stalking) so maybe my answer will change after we get back!

That puts us at 750 points in this hypothetical which is close to our total number of points in real life so we wouldn’t have to “sacrifice” too many vacations!

$4 RIV - assuming I can add to my current 153 points, would allow me 303 points for a 1 bedroom. Or I can bank/borrow every other year if starting fresh.

$4 VDH - I'm optimistically betting that Disneyland Forward WILL go ahead and we'll have theme park expansions built around it, even if they are 15 years out. Also, I may be in the minority, but I actually really prefer VDH over VGC, with accessibility to the parks being the only advantage VGC has for me over VDH.

$4 AUL - 300 points a year at Aulani would go nicely towards a working vacation. (Now you have me looking at resale contracts...)

$2 CFW - to appease my 8 year old, who cried when we left the Cabins after our vacation a couple weeks ago and said HE is buying Cabin points as soon as he is a grown up (at this rate, there will be plenty left for him to buy) 😂

$1 HH - a $1 throwaway only if I have to because I'm out of money and the dues are cheaper than VB.

I'd be in for a ROUGH annual dues bill with this allocation, though.

Hrmm never thought of people adding to their current contracts but that might be an interesting idea for the future.

$10 - BWV - 50 years on the boardwalk, able to walk to two resorts, with that points chart for SV at 11 months - sign me up!
$4 - VGF - our favorite resort, could use with our existing points and would enjoy it. Plus, not hard to use at 7 months the times we tend to travel.
$1 - VB - if buying 37.5 VGF points for a dollar wasn't an option - having remaining dollar VB wins because of the direct beach front access, a spa, great activities, and a lovely restaurant.

I do not ever imagine owning 600 points, but it would be fun!

$5 BWV x 2
$3 BLT
$2 AUL

I thought I had my picks quickly until I thought about the fact that current point charts apply for the next 50 years. That instantly changed my initial strategy of buy where I want to stay. For example, I like RR more than BC and BW but feel like the option of standard BW rooms trumps RR as my Epcot/HS area choice resort. 2BR BW for the approximate cost of a 1BR RR... yes please! Monorail for 3 points and lower point rooms gives me BLT. Finally, I'll take some AUL for 2 points to finish off my 15. Considered AKV for the club level rooms but Decided to lock in AUL for long Hawaii trips every couple years.

Can my DS setup a lemonade stand for some extra funding?

$1 for 30 points is quite the steal. :)

I would do $11.33 for VGF so I could do a 1 bedroom during Spring Break.
The other $3.67 would net me 110 points at PVB that I would use to rent out to help with dues on these newly acquired 450 points.

$8 VGF - My favorite. Enough for a larger unit during fall frenzy or two trips in a studio during fall frenzy.
$5 VGC - Studio annually or a larger unit every other year (harder for me to get to DL).
$2 SSR - SAP with low dues for scraps at other resorts I like if I used all of VGF on one trip during fall frenzy. I could also book VGF resort studios in the spring.

VGF and VGC would also give me good options to rent at premium price points if I needed to get rid of points one year.

I did think about increasing the price of BW and BC just because their charts are so good and it'd be insane to lock that in for the next 50 years but decided I was too lazy to think about how much I should increase it to 😂
