If You Disliked Boma ...

Is it the exotic spicing of the food that is unappealing? I've read that some say the food tastes sweetly spiced, like cinnamon. Does that include the basics like prime rib? We're a family of four that includes two teens. Since we're staying at AKL I thought we'd give Boma a try, but not if we'll all be disappointed. And we sure don't want to end up having to eat off the kiddie section!

There's something for everyone at Boma. Some of the meat dishes have that cinnamony flavor that you find in some north African dishes. I don't care for it myself, but there are lots of alternatives. They've always had plain beef and grilled chicken when I've been there. The great thing about Boma is that it lets you try many different flavors and if you don't like one particular dish, there's always something else to try.

We didn't dislike it, just didn't find it to be the "must do" restaurant that other posters did. As Caren said, most people will find something at Boma that they can eat, so you should definitely try it for yourself. As far as the dishes went, the various "spiced" items were ok, but not something I would seek out again.

Unless we're with someone who really wants to eat at Boma, we're probably not going to return, but I'm glad we went to experience it for ourselves.

I don't remember prime rib. There was some kind of roast beef but it was something that was a lot leaner than prime rib. The beef was pretty plain but there were interesting sauces on the side for those that like a bit of spice.

I did not notice any unusual taste to the prime rib. My husband is not a huge fan of dinner at Bomas so now we just eat breakfast there. It is so convenient to have breakfast there before you head out for the day.

I agree.. I liked Boma and am glad we went but it will be a while before we go back as it woould not make my top 10 disney resturants.

It wasn't that it was too unusual, there were some very standard buffet foods in addition to the more exotic. We would eat there again if staying at AKL. However, we wouldn't go out of our way to eat there if we were not. The dominant "unusual" spice that I found was curry, if that is something you are not used to. Except for the ribs, if I remember correctly, most meat sauces were served on the side. Where you could take a bit and try it with your meats. What I did find unusual were the soups and some salads. THey had more of an exotic or unusual flair.

I loved Boma and found that the flavors are pretty mild. Of course, I'm the type of person who loves to try all kinds of things, so "mild" is a pretty relative term. But I did see something for everyone...including spaghetti & chicken fingers. I didn't really find anything so out there that someone wouldn't be able to find anything to eat. I can't wait to eat there again!

I don't know much about traditional African cuisine but I was expecting very spicey food. I'm guessing the dishes were toned down a lot for the american palate. All that aside, the food, ambience and service were good.

Why would you *expect* something very spicy (especially if you aren't familiar with traditional African food)? I've had authentic African food before and have come across some pretty mild dishes. I'm sure there are spicy dishes, but that doesn't mean every last dish will be that way.

Most is not too exotic. The spice people are referring to is Cardmondon (sp) and isn't "hot" at all. Its better IMHO due to the awesome soups and different side dishes you don't see at the other buffets. The desserts as well IMHO are notch above.

I was pleasntly surprised by Boma. I didn't think we would like it, but since we were staying at AKL we decided we had to try it. It was a LOT better than we had expected. Even my 2 kids (one who is very picky) had plenty to eat.

Definitly give it a try if you are staying at AKL!

I didn't dislike BOMA but my stomach was upset after eating there. I'm sure there was nothing wrong with the food. My system just wasn't up to all the different spices. Maybe I mixed too many different dishes, but they didn't settle right for me. I didn't over eat either, just didn't set right. I prefer JIKO to BOMA. I like the choices at Jiko. I think its one of the best restuarants on property

We enjoyed both the more exotic dishes and the plain dishes at Boma. Though, I think the choices for dinner are great and very different than any other dinner buffet on property but we didn't see anything special or too different about breakfast.

Also, Boma for dinner is a great choice for vegetarians....many more choices than your traditional dinner buffet.

We have eaten at Boma 4 times now and have an ADR for 2/21. Both of my girls (9, 12) love the buffet and my husband and I get to try wonderful soups and hummus! We try to get there 1 hours before our seating and watch the animals outside, listen to African stories around the campfire, and shop!
It's worth the trip no matter where we are staying!

I found the food at Boma - well not very interesting or authentic. I am in the camp of 'it wasnt spicy enough'. The food there isnt like the authentic African dishes I have tasted. I suppose it has been dumbed down to appeal to a wider public. I found the desserts much too sweet. I suppose I just dont understand the hype.

We're with the "tried it, but probably won't do it again bunch". BUT I'm glad we tried it!!! I'm trying to picture my two boys going when they were teens and actually I think my little one would have liked it and found it interesting but not great and I don't think my older one would have liked it.

BUT again, I think it's good to try at least once. Too many people think it's great, so it does appeal to many and you might be one of them. That's the thing about Disney Restaurants, sometimes you gotta just bite the bullet and try it to find out where you stand.
