Where would it be?

We are thinking about moving south in a couple of years and Virginia seems to be the perfect place. We were just there visiting friends over the weekend and everything was so beautiful. They are in the Richmond area (Midlothian).

I have always loved Williamsburg. I planted boxwood, just so I could get that Williamsburg smell. :goodvibes

Roanoke/Salem - smaller area and beautiful. I love SW Virginia! Plus, the cost of living will be half of what it is in Williamsburg or other metro VA areas!

My husband was almost transferred to Virginia for his job about 4 years ago. At the time we were looking in Chesterfield which was near where the office was. We had gotten alot of positive feedback from people who recommended that area. Houses there were so much cheaper than where we currently live.

I'd pick Williamsburg, or if you want a more rural county closer to Richmond, then New Kent. You can easily drive to the beach, without living with the traffic in Tidewater on a daily basis. Busch Gardens and outlet shopping are right in your backyard. Many historic homes, and Williamsburg and Jamestown's historic areas. Route 5, which follows the James River from Richmond to Williamsburg has fabulous old historic homes/plantations. The weather---it rarely snows or sticks east of Richmond.

Traffic is a hassle in Tidewater, or Northern Va, so I'd steer clear of them.

I'm from Tidewater and you are correct, traffic is a hassle. It's still a nice area, and I would be sad to leave.

OP: If I had my pick, I'd move to Williamsburg. You're close enough to the bigger cities to enjoy them when you want to, but you don't have to live day in and day out with their downfalls.

Cape Charles Va it is right before the Bay Bridge Tunnel and Va beach. Love it.

When our friends were looking to buy, they were told to stay away from Northern Virginia too. I wasn't looking there.

Thanks for the info, keep it coming.

I need the ocean so somewhere along the Eastern coast perhaps just North of Virginia Beach (forget the name of the town though).

I would push Charlottesville, it is lovely here - less than an hour from the mountains, 2 hours from DC, 2 hours to Bay, 3 hours to Beach. It is expensive but with the University there are lots of benefits including good medical care.

If I wanted mountains, I love Lexington, lovely historic college town.

My husband loves the Smith Mtn Lake area.

I would like to retire to the Northern Neck area, between Tappahannock and Gloucester as I love the Bay and tidal marshes.

I love all of VA, you can't go wrong with any place in the state IMO!

I like the Chesapeake Bay area. Also - I agree with Previous poster - Roanoke was a cute little town :)

I am writing down your suggestions. I figure we need to start planning if this is actually gonna happen.

my family is from Newport News...so I would definitely pick the Williamsburg area by the James River at Kingsmill....I just love that place.

Williamsburg is really a growing area and my second favorite place to visit. I was born in Suffolk and do not like it anymore when I visit. I agree with the congestion. It would depend on whether you would like the mountains more.

As a resident of Northern VA, I heartily agree! If it weren't for DH's job, we'd be long gone. Traffic alone is ulcer-inducing. I was raised in Ohio, and even after 9 years here, I am still not used to how unfriendly/anti-social a lot of my neighbors are.
