If You Could Have Picked Your Own Name

I was supposed to be Amanda, but my parents couldn't decide on a nickname. Apparently, mom wanted Mandy and Dad wanted Amy. So they scrapped Amanda altogether! Mom was in college when I was born, and her Shakespeare/English class was reading "The Merchant of Venice" during the pergnancy. Thanks to Shakespeare, I ended up as Jessica Anne (Anne is a family name/spelling). Like Katerkat, Jessica was unheard of when I was born, but 10 years later it was the top of the list!

My daughters should not have to worry about their names ever making the top 100, much less top 10: Ashlynn Jayne and Maiya Victoria. I always did like different names!

I like my nick name, Maggie, but I would have loved to be anything other than Margaret when I was growing up. :earseek: If I could re-name myself now, it would be ... Maggie. It fits me. :p

If I ever had a little girl, here name would have been Saffron Jean, Sarah Jean or Hannah Jean. I bet she would have wanted to re-name herself. :p

I've always hated my name. I like Kimberly, but unfortunately, that's not my name. My parents didn't like Kimberly because it was too 'girly' (never mind the fact that I do happen to be a GIRL!). They figured I'd be called Kim anyway, so that's what they went with. Funny thing is, had I been named Kimberly, that's what I would have gone by. Sometimes, people will call me Kimberly thinking that's my name - I never correct them! I always liked Kelli and Elizabeth, too.

Kim

I have always hated my name. Not disliked, I mean I hate it. My real name is Rae and my middle name is Jean, so I just put them together when I got older and became Raejean. I don't like it, but I can live with it. It is better than what they were going to name me which was Gay Anne. I always wanted a long name with a cute nick name, like Jennifer (Jenny), Elizabeth (Beth) something along that line.

My name, Wendy, is boring, IMO. I would have preferred something more feminine, like Rachel or Hannah...but I didn't use those names for my daughters...Jessica and Hayley...I really don't know why..

I've always liked my name. I think Jill suits me. It's short and to the point!;)

Interesting question. I would have liked to be called Kelly or Katie, I guess.:D

I like my name, Sherry, but when I was younger, I went through a stage where I wanted to change my name to Kelly. :teeth:
My dad wanted to name me Penelope! :earseek: :earseek:

My Mom almost named me Beverly! But somehow, she went with Kathleen instead!

I'm okay with it, I guess...I like the fact that I can be a "Kathy" or a "Kathleen" or a "Kate!"

My name is Allison and I like it. My only complaint is that I was never called "Allie" by my family or my friends in school (and they still don't)...and I always wanted to be called Allie. There was another Allison in my grade and she was called Allie...I was so jealous! Most of my law school girlfriends call me Allie, so at least I get it a little bit. :)

My mom claims that she had a real pretty name picked out for me but forgot it during childbirth, and she never told anyone what it was going to me. So I grew up all my life with lots of Gilligan Island jokes, I would change my name in a heartbeat.

I hate my name. Bobbi. Ugh. I hated in school on the first day when I'd say "here" to roll call they'd say "no dear, we're looking for Bobby" and always look at the boys.

My mother almost named my Dusty Lane... I guess I prefer Bobbi to that.

If I could have picked my own name it would be Chloe :)

You'd be surprised - both these names are in the top 50 at least.....I know quite a few of each...

I've always liked my name. It's common enough that people always know how to spell it and pronounce it, but it wasn't the same as everyone else's. There was another Karen in my class in grammer school, but she was really the only other one. It wasn't like the 10 Jennys/Jennifers that I knew.

I'm just amazed reading this since just yesterday I was thinking the exact same question!!! Hey, get out of my head!;)

I would pick something else but I'm not sure what it would be.

I grew up with a name that was really unheard of in the 70's. Marisa.

I was mad too that I could never find my name on bracelets, etc.

When I was in a park with my youngest, this mom kept screaming at her daughter on the jungle gym. The first time she screamed it, I turned around and yelled what!

She looked at me sort of puzzled and said sorry, that is my name, I'm not used to my name being said in public, because there is not to many people with my name.

I see my name being used all the time now, but I can't get over how many people call me Melissa when they see my name. Do you see a L in my name. I can tell them 3 times how to pronounce it and they still can't.

I feel your pain! I am called Jennifer as much as I am called Jessica. Like you, I wonder where the Ns are in my name!

Minnesota!...what list are you looking at; I'd be curious??? So far, I've only met 2 other Ashlynns (and one is a friend of mine who liked the name so much she used it for her daughter). And I have yet to meet another Maiya (Maya Angelou and Mya (the singer) not withstanding). Just curious!

I like my name, Stephanie, well enough but I don't like my middle name, Lynn. Every girl I know that was my age all have Lynn as their middle name! When I was growing up I always wanted a very unique name or to change the spelling of my name. I would sign my name Stefanie, Stefany, etc. I don't know that I would want to change my name or anything but I love the names Hannah and Madeline.

My name is Georgette and as a kid I hated it. I thought it was to uncommon. I too could never find anything with my name on it. I wanted to be Brenda, Lisa or Donna. As an adult it's not so bad. I did give my DD's more common names, Ashley and Rachel.
