If you could cure ONE disease tomorrow, which would it be and why?

I'd have to say heart disease for these reasons:

"Heart disease is the number one killer of both men and women in the United States. Heart disease kills more women than all types of cancer combined. Overall, more women die of heart disease than men. And African-American women under the age of 60 are four times more likely to die of heart disease than white women."

Alzheimers and Parkinsons are pretty bad too. :guilty:

Going to have to go with Cancer as well.

There's a reason the Civilization game series gives you huge bonuses once you successfully research the cure. :thumbsup2

I'll say heart disease. Sure you can battle it by changing your diet and so on but too often it wins in spite of doing your best to fight it.

We just had another young, apparently healthy person drop dead of an apparent heart attack the other day. Plus I lost my dad and a few other relatives to this disease. Just about everyone in the family battles chronic blood pressure problems and it stinks.

Maybe it is not a traditional "disease", but OBESITY is by far and away the most prevalent, and most costly, health care problem in this country.

I would have to say Marfan's syndrome. The disase that killed my sister. Still there is no cure and seems like the life expectancy is going up though. They are doing lots of research.

OT- But this is my 3,000TH Post. :cheer2: :cool1:

Definitely cancer. It creates so much suffering physically, emotionally, etc. Heart disease is also a definite problem. However, it seems there are more options with heart disease now than with cancer.

Alzheimers. I'm watching my grandmother suffer through it and it's really hard. But then I suppose it's harder for the family than the person who has it. They aren't aware of the changes in themselves, especially after it's developed so much. But if not Alzheimers I'd like to be able to cure AIDS. I know 3 people IRL that have it and I wish I could cure them :(

I agree !!!!! ::yes::

my grandma passed away with alzheimers.. :guilty:

Cancer.

1) Statistically, if you live long enough, you WILL get some kind of cancer.
2) I have a feeling that solving the cancer puzzle will lead to many other important things - cures, etc.
Galahd..Curing Cancer would save the life of AIDS Patients,as so many of us now die of cancers like lymphoma and cervival cancer..It this country PWA"S die for more often of Lymphoma than of the *old* AIDS related illnesses..my MIL died of Lymphoma.

Cancer! Seems everyone is affected by it now days.

Type 1 diabetes. There is no break, no vacation, no time off from the constant management of this disease. My baby deals with several shots a day (at least three, sometimes four or more) and an average of ten finger sticks a day because he is so young and could have a sudden low. Even a minor cold causes major concern because it causes his blood glucose to rise making him need more insulin which we have to balance with food which he doesn't want because he feels bad. :sad2: It is a horrible constant juggling act that makes my baby hurt and breaks my heart over and over again.

Parkinson's disease.
Me too. There is so much being done in cancer research and many types have a better outcome than even 10 years ago. Yet watching my BIL die of PD for the past years has been heartbreaking. There is no cure, no comfort, endless pain, and the loss of independence. The meds help in the beginning but once you hit a certain point there isn't much more they can do. Experimental stuff is only for the rich or those with "golden healthcare". He was daignosed at 36 when his dd was only 4. She doesn't remember her father healthy.
So if I was to find a cure I would want it to be a cure for Parkinson's Disease.

One I haven't heard mention is MS, just wanted to throw out another one although i think my vote would also go towards cancer

My number one is cancer because I have seen my father and my brother both suffer and have their lives ended far too early. It is horrible and heartbreaking for everyone involved.

Second would be diabetes. I and several others in my family fight this disease daily and it can be a battle. There are visits to many different doctors all the time to make sure your A1C is in the correct range, to check your eyes, check your kidneys, and on and on. I know it can be controled by most people who have it, but there are those that fight the battle, do everything they are supposed to and are still loosing the battle. I hope there is a cure soon for both types.

I think two of the most horrible diseases are alzheimer's and ALS. I'd pick them both if I could.
