If you can handle Gravitron, can you handle MS orange?

DH and I took our two boys (9 & 5) to the Spokane Fair on Friday, and while making our way on the various rides, we took them on Gravitron (the ride that looks like a flying saucer and it spins around so fast that it plasters you to the wall and you can lift your feet off the floor and won't fall down). The last time DH and I rode Gravitron we were both teenagers, so it's been 20 years or more. I forgot how it feels like your lips are going to peel back and your brains are about to bust out of the back of your head.

Anyway, we all handled it well (no one got sick or anything, although myself and DS9 had headaches for a bit afterward).

DH and I have only done MS green side, and our boys have never been on MS at all. Do you think we'll be able to handle the orange side?

Another concern is my five year old not following the instruction of "look straight ahead at the screen during the entire mission". He might be too young to realize the importance of this. Anyone have any experience with younger kids on MS orange, or should we absolutely stick with the green side because of his age? (It's not like any of us will be disappointed if we have to stay with the green side. None of us have been on the orange side anyway, so we won't know what we're missing. Besides, there always the possibility of a next time.)

That is an interesting question, I too have a 5 year old and we have never been on MS before. My DH would love to go on the Orange side because he loves that sort of feeling, I however, hate that sensation and would tend to stick with the green side. I too would wonder if my DH would be missing anything since he has never been on the orange side, or should he ride in the single rider line for that and leave me and my DDs to go to the green?

personally.. i think the Graviton is more intense in the sensation dept then the MS:Orange experience.

MS:Orange isn't that bad, IF you don't look around and just look out the window.. if you don't be prepared for headaches and nausea..

If you want to make sure your 5 year old pays attention to the rules.. take him to the back yard, grab him by the noggin and swing him around as fast as you can.. then once you stop, look him square in the eyes and say "thats what it will feel like if you look around on MS.. okay?" :rotfl:

(Just kidding abou that last part.. seriously..)

I am not familiar with MS so I have to ask --> green side / orange side?

What's the difference?

One is more intense then the other.

The Orange spins you around like the Gravitron and give you more of the lifting off to space feeling where the green does not spin just tilts.

I went on it last month with DS, age 10, and I was so nervous about it. I can handle rides pretty well, not-at-all prone to motion sickness, but all the hype had me thinking this was the mother of all motion-rides! ;) I didn't feel any spinning sensation at all, just the g-force pull and sways that I thought were very similar to Soarin' or Star Wars. It was great fun! Perhaps one of you could take your 9 year old on it, then make the call as to whether your younger one could handle it? It might take a little clever planning for FP's and best times to ride, but it's a thought!

I made the mistake of looking at my brother right when it took off... He thought he was going to be wearing the lunch I had eaten that day... He is very lucky he didn't...

My son went on it also and actually faced forward like he was told and was just fine...

The Gravitron is definitely more intense than the intense side of Mission Space. In Mission Space's intense side you don't feel the G's for as long as you do in the Gravitron. Also someone mentioned something about the single rider line in M:S,you can't do singles any longer, the singles line was removed when they changed the ride to include the Green and Orange sides.

They are basically the same ride, creating a artificial gravity by spinning... I haven't been on a graviton (though I know what you are talking about) I have been on its predecessor the rotor (barrel ride that spins and you are left stuck to the side) and trust me Orange side Mission space is much tamer!

personally I can handle the Gravitron just fine, but did terribly on MS orange side...I felt woozy for at least an hour afterwards...that's just my experience.

I think MS is worse because you are closed in with that pressure feeling. I used to love the gravitron. I do not do orange anymore, once was enough.

same here. I felt fine on gravitron. I thought I would lose my lunch on MS.

I think the graviton is worse because when it starts to slow down I get that dizzy/spinning feeling. MS is so smooth when it starts and stops spinning, you have no idea you are spinning, you just feel the force. graviton has that force for a longer amount of time, MS is just during parts of the ride, like the take off and the sling shot part. That force only lasts for a few seconds and then it is over.

I hate, hate, hate roller coasters and that losing your stomach feeling, but I love MS orange. To me, MS messes with your head, not your stomach.
I know a lot of people who say the opposite: roller coasters are find, but MS is nauseating.

I've looked down at the buttons and over at other people while on MS and still haven't felt sick. I think closing your eyes might mess with your head a bit.
However, I can feel pressure in my head right after I get off the ride, but it normally goes away once I walk that long hallway and get out of the gift shop. I went on MS once when I was just recovering from the flu and had a realllly bad pressure headache for the rest of the day. Wouldn't recommend going if you are already sick!

What you feel on the Gravitron depends on whether you were sitting near the center or near the perimeter or in between and also whether you are sitting versus lying down. It's fully enclosed so you can't see yourself spinning.

You'll feel things differently depending on which direction you face. Looking at the video screen in Mission Space, you are facing the rotation center.

The Round Up (same as Rotor?) is a cylindrical cage where everyone stands around the perimeter facing the center. It is "open" and you can see everything (spinning) around you. In addition the entire cylinder, level at first, tilts.

>>> grab him by the noggin
In a playground near you you might find a small manually propelled merry go round with a circular perimeter bench instead of horses. (Ph. D in physics needed:) Now I don't know the rotational speed (or RPM) or the radius (here, seat to center distance) of Mission Space. Next time you see a Gravitron, you could figure out its RPM by observing from the outside.

>>> myself(sic) and DS9 had headaches
I rode Mission Space Orange exactly once and decided, "never again". I believe that as you get up over the hill (over 40) you are more and more likely to feel sick on or after thrill rides.

I felt really sick on MS orange and have only been on once. I spent the next hour recovering on Elen's Dream. I felt sick to my stomach and my head was spinning. Next time I would take an anti -nauseant pill. That might help.

same here. I felt fine on gravitron. I thought I would lose my lunch on MS.

Me too. The Gravitron was always my favorite ride at the Champlain Valley Fair. I rode the original Mission Space (before they had green/orange) in January '07 and was VERY sick for the rest of the day. Perhaps they changed the ride and both the orange and green sides are tamer than the original, but I still won't go on the orange side. For that matter, I don't think I'll go on the green side either. I'll stick to Soarin'! ;)

To me, Gravitron is more intense than MS Orange by a good bit, but I rode the Green version twice with wifey this March and it wasn't nearly as lame as I thought it would be.

You're really not missing anything by riding green vs orange. It's the same exact ride. And like during take off, you still get tilted upward and you get the same experience from it. You just don't get that woozy head feeling.
Orange is great for the ones that love the stomach in your mouth feeling and your head about 10 ft off the ground. But disney did it right by adding the green side because now any one can get on it.
I even got kari on it, who gets motion sick from thunder and was absolutly horrified and screaming like a baby on the shamu ride because it went too fast.
Your kids don't have to know what the other one does. Be safer and much happier on the green, rather than wasting so much time trying to recover. And if you want that lighter than air/floating feeling, go on Soarin. That one always makes me feel like I'm lighter than air, and if you take your shoes off before take off, I always feel like my feet should be skimming through the water in the ocean/river scenes.

Your 5 yr old is tall enough to ride MS? We just got back and ours was not by several inches!

Jennifer

Well our 5 yr old DS (birthday in June) is 45.5 inches tall right now, but his dad (my hubby) is 6'6" tall, so that would explain why our kids our a little taller than average. Me, well I'm the short one on my hubby's side of the family......I'm only 5'3" tall. It makes for kinks in the neck 'cause I'm looking up all the time.
