Hello everyone! We just got back from our third US/IOA vacation this year and thought I’d pass this advice down to you riders that get nauseous or have that fear of becoming nauseous on rides such as FJ! My fiancé becomes nauseous on FJ, the Simpsons, Spiderman, and anything like that. She was scared of trying out FJ the first time because of the fear of becoming sick, so we tried that ride last (at the end of the day). Sure enough, on the second screen she became very sick, and felt ill for the rest of the evening. I figured it was caused by the screens and not necessarily the movement of the benches.

I had an idea which worked wonderfully. Whenever a screen comes on she closes her eyes and when the live props come back, I squeeze her leg and she opens her eyes. We tried that, and it worked! No nausea at all, she loved the ride! She missed half the ride, but at least she could enjoy the amazing live props without any nausea. Her family came up to meet us one of the days and her father is the same way with nausea. We tried it on the FJ and sure enough, worked again!

When she would ride FJ back to back she would get a little uneasy in her stomach, but it’ll subside in about half an hour, but this would happen on multiple rides (only when done back to back). So we bought Dramamine “Less Drowsy” and tried that. Now, with doing that trick on FJ and the Dramamine (which could be purchased at CVS or wherever) she could ride back to back and feel no nausea at all. So that was great! But… even though it said less drowsy, she seemed very tired for the rest of the day and as soon as she touched the bed she would knock out lol. It seems the first day she would be very drowsy from this medication, the second day a little less drowsy, the third day and on she was more awake and not very drowsy.

Okay, so this past week I tried something. I thought maybe this medication was acting as a placebo. Maybe she believed that the medication was working and expected not to feel sick. So what if she believed she took the medication, but didn’t? Would she still feel nauseous? In the morning, when we were about to have breakfast, is when she would normally take the medication. Only this time, I gave her normal vitamin B along with a vitamin C which looked a lot like the Dramamine. She took the vitamin B and C and no Dramamine lol. As we were walking through City Walk, she tells me, “Strange, I don’t feel drowsy at all, this is great!” I’m now starting to get nervous. So we go straight to FJ, hop on and loved it. Went right back in because there was no wait, loved it again! Went to the Hippogriff, loved it! Hippogriff again (no wait)! Had fun, but oh oh, that 30 minute nausea came in. We walk it off on the way to Spiderman (with a butterbeer lol). She felt better at this point, but she felt a little nauseous on Spidey! That’s when I had to tell her about the little experiment… I received a big -_- look and now she rightfully double checks everything I give her lol.

After this, I gave her the actual Dramamine, and sure enough, no more nausea on rides and a little drowsiness kicked in. So, one of the last days that we were there this past week, she decided to keep her eyes open the whole way with this pill, and she was fine! She felt just fine, just would have to rest like 5-10 minutes before jumping back on. She loved the ride even more. So she got to enjoy the full ride 3 times this past week, and she was ecstatic! She is able to ride the Simpsons, FJ, Spidey, and any ride of this sort with the Dramamine!

So to sum this all up, if you’re nervous because you think you might get sick on FJ, try the leg squeeze trick (it worked on 2 people that easily become nauseous). If you feel you think you can look at the screens, keep your eyes open, if you start to feel a little sick close them right away! Then try the Dramamine medication and try the ride again! You shouldn’t get nauseous! That medication lasts pretty much the entire day and make sure you take it an hour before riding. I know everyone is different, but it worked on 2 people that normally become nauseous and will feel sick for the duration of the day!

By the way, the new Spiderman enhancement is insanely amazing! What an incredible difference! It’s like a new ride!

Good luck!

i went on it for the first time last month. I am prone to motion sickness on those types of rides, but I still wanted to try it. Just like you posted, I closed my eyes on the parts with the screen. I didn't plan on doing that but the first time the screen came on, I immediately felt nauseous, but once I closed my eyes I was fine, and when it was just the live props, I didn't feel sick at all. Of course I had nobody squeezing my leg to let me know when the screen was gone, lol, but I would just peek and if the screen was still there, closed them again.
Unfortunately someone in our party who is also prone to motion sickness went on and started feeling sick right after it started (had taken Dramamine before), kept his eyes closed the entire time, but still got really, really sick from it. He threw up several times over the next hour - hour and a half and felt horrible for most of the day (we did it first thing in the a.m.). So closing your eyes obviously doesn't work for everyone.

Like I stated:

I know everyone is different, but it worked on 2 people that normally become nauseous and will feel sick for the duration of the day!

The first part of that ride is you leaving the castle and it's a screen. He should have his eyes closed at this part already. The first time my fiance tried this ride (without dramamine or the squeezing of the leg) she felt sick at this screen and was sick for the rest of the ride and hours after. So if that person in your party starts with his eyes closed and can ride with someone that squeezes his leg as soon as the live props start, then he may be fine. As soon as he realizes a screen is coming, close them and continue to do this for the duration of the ride. What your eyes are seeing in comparison to what you are feeling and actually doing is what causes the nausea, so cut this portion out and you should be fine. If you become sick on rides that move you around without screens, then obviously this won't work for you.

Once you've done this with success, throw in dramamine and try with your eyes open. If you still feel sick, well at least you know you can enjoy the live props of this ride (which are amazing) with someone advising you when the screen portions finish.

I also get motion sickness - and the first time I went, I had forgotten my dramamine! BUT, it was too special to skip - so like was suggested I did close my eyes during the video parts, and kept trying to tell my mind it was ok -

The 2nd time I rode it - my dd had forgotten she had flip flops on, so she grabbed them off and gave me one - me concentrating on that flip flop was so much better than closing my eyes - so maybe looking down at your hand or something specific to help your mind know you are not flying 100mph will help you also!

On Soarin I tend to look at the guy on the floor that runs the projection machine, or look right or left to the next row of cars, to help my mind realize we are not moving!

There are other things you can take that are natural without any drowsiness

Ginger, peppermint leaves, fennel seeds, etc. Be sure to check the internet , then speak to your doctor about how to take these natural remedies.

I know when Disney had Body Wars that ride really made me ill. I still tend to get sick on things like Rock n Roller Coaster, but I found a combination of Dramamine (double dose) and ginger gum seems to help lots. Of course I hate gum and only chew it for the ride. Guess I will be stocking up for our June trip to Universal!

Sometimes my stomach feels a little off but I am determined not to miss FJ. The only time I remember felling awful was years ago on Body Wars. I have no problems on Soarin & I survived Expedition Everest (the backwards part). I just won't be a repeat rider over & over again. If I took any kind of medication I would be on the bench with a pillow & that wouldn't be any fun. As long as the screen is precise with the movement I will be OK. If that makes sense.

Oh I do have one question about the ride movement. Does it go upside down at any point? I always worry about my glasses:cool2:

lol, this feels like Soarin at 100mph. People kept saying it was like Soarin, that's mostly why I went on it. Ummmmm, not quite. Yes it's the same "type" of ride, just a heck of a lot faster.
Also, it doesn't go upside down, but leans you really far back (like you're lying down), plus it just overall jerks you around a lot, so I wouldn't keep your glasses on.

Oh no I have to keep my glasses on or I would get a sickening headache:sick:So now I wonder if I will have to sit this one out:eek:

I've worn glasses on this ride and they were absolutely fine. It just tips you completely on your back- if you can lay down on your back and keep your glasses on, you'll be fine :thumbsup2

I have to have my glasses too or I would see nothing of the ride! I went out and bought a cord for eyeglasses. I bought Croakies brand after reading some other posts on here that recommended them. They were pretty cheap and look like they will do the job. My 18 year old DS was appalled I'd wear them in public but I don't care! I just don't want to risk losing my glasses!

By the way, thanks for this thread--I will have two people on my trip who get motion sick. I have already bought medication, but I will tell them if it isn't working to try closing their eyes or concentrating on something close. I am still trying to figure out the car ride to the hotel, I have to drive (only one old enough for rental car) and I can't put them both in the other front seat! It will be an interesting trip!

!

LOL! Since when do we care what our teens think of our "accessorizing!?" Mine give me fits about my "fanny pack", bucket caps, sunscreen, cargo shorts...
Well...come to think of it, I do "tourist-geek-out" to the max!
Hey, my nickel, my rules kiddos.

Try Meclizine. It does not make you drowsy and works great. I take a dose in the evening and then one about an hour before hitting the parks. Never got sick on anything the whole time we were there. (If you are really worried you can take 2 before going to the parks.)

Also on the FJ ride keep your head firmly on the back of the seat and look straight ahead. That helps!

Meclizine and Dramamine are the same thing; Dramamine is just a brand name.

thanks for this tip! I am the only one in my group that gets motion sickness. I can do RnR but anything with a screen I am done in!:confused3:confused3
Never heard of Meclizine but will find it.

btw does anyone remember when the first row in a motion ride was reserved for people who did not want to get bumped around? I believe it was the Hannah Baerra ride way way back in the 90's...I loved it!

They have that for Shrek too and I'm sure it will still be like that in the new Despicable Me ride.
