How does the transaction work? We both (me and the selling party) agree to days and place and amount of points. Then what happens? And how do I get confirmation that all went well? If someone is renting here on DIS, does that mean they have met a certain amount of posts or something that they are legit? Please don't take that to sound bad. I don't want to think anyone is out to get anyone, but you have to be careful with money, ya know.

It's all up to the owner. You could ask them for a contract, but that's only a piece of paper. Find someone who you feel comfortable with. And that might not be the cheapest price. It takes trust. You could always ask for references that you could contact.

There are a few bad apples out there, including here on the DIS. The webmasters have done a lot to try to keep the bad sorts off the Rent/Trade board, but even then, a few will slide by.

Read all the sticky threads at the top of the page on the Rent/Trade Board. Don't use Western Union to send cash. Get phone numbers or exchange e-mails before you send money. Make sure you can contact the member in an emergency.

Rental transactions between private parties have no assurances nor connections from the DIS. These are strictly between the individuals. The DIS does not in any way certify nor vouch for anyone's validity. As suggested read the sticky threads that will inform you of how to be cautious. Even at that, you will have to assume there is always a risk involved.

I do understand that DIS has nothing to do with the renting/selling of points.

Do most transactions take place through PayPal?

Once again, depends on the owner. Many owners love Paypal, others refuse to use it. My impression is that most owners work through certified check.

Ms. Deb is totally right... make sure you have someone that you can contact by phone... if they won't give you their phone #.... don't bother. Oh, and verify that phone # by calling them to confirm it is them...

I rented points for the first time for our upcoming trip... I was a little nervous! I found someone who had the points I wanted, she emailed me the info on availablilty. Then she called me by phone before she acutally made the reservation. It was nice to talk to her in person... she was as nervous as I was I think! I ended up upgrading to a 1 bedroom, so she had to use some of her upcoming points, which she was worried about since she can't change them back if I didn't pay. So we just agreed that I would pay her by paypal for the whole thing, and then she would make the reservation directly in my name. We did all of it (the reserving part) in under 5 minutes! It took trust, but after speaking to her on the phone I was fine with it. She emailed called me back with the confirmation number, and then sent the contract and "real" paper confirmation when it arrived (takes 10 business days).

I agree with people that say you need to be careful, but also the owners have to be carfeul with us! :) I would definitely recommend talking by phone. Good luck!
