If we don't stay on Disney property what would we be missing?

It might not work for us to stay on Disney property this time. I know we would miss out on MM/EE and the overall "experience" of being at a DL hotel. Also, the pools are better than the motel pools across the street. Anything else I am forgetting? Just trying to way my options....

I believe a MM is offered with most park hoppers that are over 3 days. If you buy through getawaytoday you get two MM.

You could always get a hotel on Harbor that has a nice Disney view. We've stayed at the hojos and had a nice view of disneyland and they also had two nice pool areas. We're staying there again in a couple months and the dks are very excited about the new pirate water slides they put in since our last stay.

Whatever you decide, have a great time! :goodvibes

You'd be missing out on spending 3 or maybe 4 times as much for a place to sleep. ;)

I think the HoJo's new Castaway Cove is definitely in competition with the resort pools now, and if you get a super ent. rate, you'll really be pleased with the savings. You also can get a fridge and microwave in your rooms, and quite often, more square footage than you'll find in the resort hotels.

Can ya tell I'm an off-site kind of gal? ;)

It's so fun to be in a DL hotel and have the whole immersion experience. WE loved it on our first trip! But we can't do it again... just can't justify the cost. So, if you just can't swing it, remember you can still have a fabulous time! Don't beat yourself up for realizing that sometimes, the burden of the expense would take away some of your enjoyment. If you're feeling guilty for the amount it's costing you to stay onsite, then you might not enjoy it as much.

When are your dates? There are some very nice hotels nearby that would cost much less and still have nice pool areas for the kids.

If you buy your parkhopper tickets through GetAwayToday, you'll still get 2 MM/EE's. That's usually enough for most people to get lots done.

Hope that helps! :goodvibes

We are actually only staying at the DL hotel the next time we go because its DD's birthday. otherwise we stay at one of the BW hotels. Its just as close as some of the DL hotels to walk there. We booked through WDtravel, and still got the MM passes. We only went to sleep and take mini breaks, otherwise all our time was spent in the parks.

This time around I am nearly tempted just to stay at the BW again and use the extra money saved for extra treats in the park for DD. But we want something really special for her. Just the joy of being at the DL hotel for her would brighten her face for the next year. Its nearly $700 difference for our stay!!! I know I am a CRAZY mom!

Totally off topic but I was noticing your picture in your signature and wondering how you did that. I have a son who has autism and would love a little picture similar to that in my signature - it's adorable! :)

Being on-site vs. off-site is totally different at DL than at WDW. The hotels and motels across the street on Harbor are just as close or, in some cases, closer than the Disney hotels. By far, the non-Disney hotels are less expensive and there really aren't many perks associated with the Disney hotels. Everyone with a at least 3 days on their pass gets one early entry day. You can make reservations and eat at the Disney hotel restaurants whether you're staying there or not. I guess it depends on how much you want to spend and what kind of place you're most comfortable with.

Thanks everyone! I didn't know we could get the MM with a 3 day park hopper. We booked our trip last year through Getaway today and they were great! I will check into the Hojo's pirate place - sounds like it might be just what we are looking for!!

Castaway Cove looks cool and would run us close o $100 a night - WOW!!! :)

Can someone tell me if it is close to the Carousel Inn?

Another nice thing about staying on-campus, is that you can have your purchases (souvenirs, etc) sent to your room. That way, you don't have to pack them around the park, or wait in a long line to pick them up when you leave the park. We also use the room paper to charge everything we buy in the park.

You will also be missing the nice fat credit card bill at the end of your trip!!! :thumbsup2

Heather - you mention the room paper which you use to charge everything to (food and merchandise, I guess). Whenever I have gotten that, I always wondered what the biggest benefit of using it is, and have never used it. It can't be any easier to dig that out of your wallet than cash or a credit card. Is it faster? The only benefit I saw to using that paper would be, if say, you don't have the X number of dollars on hand on the day you buy the Disney collectible in question, or eat at whatever restaurant, but you WILL have the money after you get back home, and since it takes Disney charges a few days to appear on one's debit card, then you can essentially buy things without spending anything for a few days, until you get home and deposit cash in the bank. And that is a strecth. I mean, I guess it is a good idea for people who maybe leave their checkbooks or debit cards in the room and have no cash to use, I suppose. I don't know. I wasn't clear on what the real advantage of using the paper is, but I will use it if it will benefit me in some way! ;)

MissKitty, when are you going? If you are going during a slower time, it's very possible to get the entertainment rate at the HoJo which is currently $59/$74 a night depending on room location. The ent. rates may increase in 2009, but I would suspect they will go up much higher than $5.00 or so.

Also, here is a hotel map showing where the HoJo is. It's about a 10 minute walk to the esplanade. Another great thing about its location is that MiMi's Cafe is right across the street and is an awesome off-site dining option for most families, and our family's favorite by far.

At Disneyland there are so many other hotel options that are walking distance. They really dont offer that many more exclusives for resort guests. You wont be missing anything really. However for WDW I always suggest staying on property.

Agree! I'm still trying to justify why we should stay on-site for our trip next year!

Although it is the more expensive, I'm staying at the GCH for our next trip because:
- It's the best :thumbsup2
- It gives you the most immersing experience (all Disney all the time)
- Its the closest (shortest walk after a long day)
- I can charge purchases back to the room (don't have to carry as much cash on me)
- Can send packages/purchases/souvenirs back to the room
- Unlimited Magic Mornings!
- Close to GRR so i can change shoes/socks/clothes after riding
- and most importantly, I can afford it!

I would like to go Mother's Day weekend - DS's birthday is May 9th and we would like to be there for that plus a few days before or after. However, the kids promotion ends April 30th so I will need to see what the difference is.

How would I get an "entertainment" rate? Is that thru the Entertainment coupon book?

there is no right or wrong answer, and each trip is different. We have stayed off site , on site, and on site concierge. Each was the right decision for that trip.

If you walk from HoJo on the "hotel side" of Harbor, you'll pass right by Carousel in about 5 minutes time.

FYI, the Cove is NOT a pool. It has a hot tub, but is otherwise a water play area. A very fun and cute water play area (from the pictures), but still, not a pool. They do have a pool in the "garden" area of the hotel grounds, and it's lovely and big! But they aren't together. It took me, a HoJo enthusiast, WAY too long to get that there is no pool in the CC area, so now I tell everyone, just in case they don't know. :)

FWIW, when we stayed on site last September, every store we tried to have purchases sent to our room coudln't do it, b/c they were out of the forms they needed to fill in. They told us to just take the stuff to another store, but when you're with a 3 year old and trying to keep purchases from his eyes for even a few hours, taking the bag full 'o stuff to yet another store is actually harder than just giving him his toys right then. So just b/c you're staying onsite does NOT mean you'll be able to send stuff back to your room.

We use debit cards, and before I started the "buy a hefty gift card and use that to buy stuff" routine, we stayed at PPH. I much preferred just having the ONE hefty charge to account for in the checkbook, rather than the umpteen little charges.

And heck, it's just fun. :goodvibes

If you're talking about the kids fly free, then I *believe* that's a package deal, and you won't be able to get the Entertainment Book discount on top of that (buy an Entertainment Book valid during your trip, for any area in the country, and you can book with the special rate by calling HoJo Anaheim *directly* and talking to "in house reservations"). Hojoanaheim.com has forums where they list the future dates that are covered under the Entertainment rate, so you would want to check out full prices (or non-kids fly free prices) on various airlines for the various airports in the area, plus the hotels' rates, and see what's a better deal for you.

I like staying off site. If I'm going to put out large sums for a hotel, it had better be really nice and have VERY comfy beds. HoJo has been installing the same sort of bed that Westin uses for their Heavenly Beds, and I've heard too many negative reviews of the housekeeping even at GCH (and we had a bad first impression of PPH b/c of housekeeping issues) to think that it would be as 'really nice' as rack rates at those hotels would need to be. Not saying I wouldn't turn down an amazing AP rate, or a free night, but if hubby is footing the bill and I"m finding ways in our accounts to budget the bill, we're staying offsite. :upsidedow

So for us, there's nothing that we're missing ENOUGH to justify the cost to us.
