If vaccines required to cruise, DCL may have it tough

Does anyone else realize if the CDC and/or cruise lines require a vaccine to cruise that DCL will be one of the last lines to restart?

As kids will be the last tier to be get the shot, it could take awhile.

It's not the CDC that may require vaccinations - it's the countries whose ports you might be visiting.

And it's very easy to exclude kids from that requirement - like you do with masks.
CDC does exempt children under age 2 from wearing masks. Not sure that is going to make much difference with DCL since I suspect most children on board are older than that. I agree, the ports you are visiting are going to play a huge role in both vaccines and masks for children.

Yup, the reason for excluding very young kids from masks is a practical one. Similarly, if vaccines aren't approved for older kids or teens, that seems like a practical enough reason to not require vaccination of them.

And countries won't impose vaccination requirements on just ships; any mode of entry - including flights - will have to carry the same restrictions. I don't know how many airlines can operate international flights profitably without allowing families on board.

But if the occupancy numbers have to be lower in the beginning (therefore the children’s vaccines, early on reducing the number of customers with children that will reschedule as not yet vaccinated) and then slowly rise up as they can prove their systems are safe. That help with their numbers during the early sailing periods.
Those first couple sailings could be kind of sweet for adults. But for children, the few that would still make it on the ship, would be so bored.

Crystal Cruise just announced that vaccination will be required to sail. Their clientele is on the older end but I could see every cruise line eventually getting there. I’m fine with that. Of course destination countries will need to be open. I imagine a specially designed vaccination card that will need to accompany passports like the card I had to take to Africa years ago to prove I had. Yellow fever shot.

I wonder how many fake vaccination card scams are going to start? I can't imagine that there could be any sort of national database to check people against anytime soon...based on the current climate of folks from one side to the other, I would not put it past people to provide or show up with "proof" of vaccination.....don't expect to be able to count on people think of others...

The digital health passport is coming whether people like it or not.

Correct. ppl that think they'll be able to board a plane or sail on a ship without proof of vaccines are not living in reality. It's coming, and soon.
After planes and cruises it'll be trains, theaters, sports venues, concert halls, gyms, buses.
Then restaurants and stores
Then it'll be a requirement for employment and admittance to schools.
It's a brave new world out there.

It might make sense to require proof of vaccination for the early sailings. Must be at reduced capacity anyway and adults are less likely to be irritated at some of the things that will not be available or will be different (like character greetings). If only adults, they could spread out at all the pools which would make social distancing easier and reduce load in all public spaces. They could get the kinks out of the process using only adults and then be ready to sail with children after that.

Gosh, I never even considered a fake card. Mine is just a little card with hand written info on it, would be pretty easy to fake.

I disagree.
I also don’t believe DCL will require vaccination.

while it is a brave new world and an animal farm at that, there are laws and limitations with patents, double political speak and authorizations.

could it be strongly encouraged? Absolutely. Dr. Fauci (while he flip flops often in his statements) has funded research at the NIH that show that vaccine hesitancy is only driven upwards when their is a requirement.

even hospitals don’t require the flu shot, and give medical staff the opportunity to optout by wearing a mask.

so to jump from vaccines being a useful health tool, to vaccines being mandated for simple life is extreme. There are many laws that would have to change, the biggest being congress approving limited liability to vaccine makers. Could it pass currently? Maybe. Will it be taken to the Supreme Court? Absolutely.

we won’t know the resolution to this for years and years.
right now employers cannot require the vaccines for covid because they are still under the EUA. Even the US military hasn’t required the covid vaccines (hint because they can’t!)
Once they become approved by ACIP, we’ll have a better idea what employers can and will do regarding liability and exemptions of employees. What will worker’s compensation cover if there is a case of Bell’s palsy or an anaphylactic reaction requiring short term disability? No one knows!
Then that will trickle down to consumers.

we just don’t have the legal precedence to determine what anyone would do, but we do have peer reviewed data to show the best course of action if we want uptake to be high.

I don't think it's going to be DCL requiring it. But, the countries that DCL will port in may require it. If that happens, DCL will require people on those cruises to have that (or any other) vaccine.

Much like the Yellow Fever vaccine requirement for certain South American cruises. It's not the cruise line requiring the vaccination, it's the country being visited.

when I got my vaccines the person who filled out my cdc card did tell me that our info will be inputted into a cdc database which will be available later To verify status.

working on a database right now. I hope this info can be added to our passports. Or even our state drivers licenses.

sounds like a plan I would welcome.

Actually, employers can and have already started requiring staff to get the Covid vaccine.

DD is a Dr in a major metropolitan hospital and all staff are required to have a flu vaccine by 10/31 each year. There is no mask opt-out.

My apologizes.

employers are attempting to mandate them, and then being successfully challenged in court.

lawyer Aaron Siri and attorney Anthony Sabatini are two people I’ve been following that are taking these requirements to court while the EUA still stands.

once ACIP has certified it as a regular vaccine, we’ll be able to see the legal precedent of liability with employers.

I would *assume* that these mandates will need to come from government entities to hold up in court.
