Because I'm pretty sick of hearing how the vast left wing media are somehow conspiring to paint the war in Iraq in such a negative light, and that's what this is about. Should the press serve as no more than a bunch of parrots repeating everything said by the white house, or should they actually investigate on their own ? Do people that believe the press MAKES the news negative think they're just making things up ? Do you think the body counts are being artificially inflated ?

It's ridiculous to blame the media for the things that ARE happening in Iraq. It amounts to shooting the messenger just because you don't like the message they were given.

No. But the fact that the media spends weeks covering the prisoner humiliation story in Iraq and never shows things like Iraqi children playing soccer with US troops, troops holding babies and little girls going to school shows a very one sided view of the facts.

The media feeds off of death and destruction, not just as far as the war goes, but as far as EVERYTHING goes. It paints an ugly picture of a world that is not ALL ugly.

That would be true if the media would report EVERYTHING that IS happening in Iraq. We get months of "prisoner abuse" coverage, and only a day of Nick Berg coverage. We get viturally NO coverage of the daily life of an average Iraqi no longer under Saddam's rule. Why do you suppose that is?

Well, I find your response fairly shocking. I am not sure what you found to laugh about. No matter what bias you feel D Day was presented from, the assault on the beach was no laughing matter. If it weren't for those brave, courageous and self sacrificing men, you would be speaking German.

I don't remember saying that D-Day or WWII itself was funny. I don't even come close to thinking that. It was sent to me by a friend who works at a newspaper in Michigan. It satirizes some perceptions about modern media and not the war itself.

Well, that'd be because the Iraqi prison scandal is NEWS....Kids playing soccer with troops ? Give me a break

As for the Daniel Berg thing....It was covered...what else is there to say ? The WHOLE story was told....while the military and white house have only let news dribble out about the prison scandal (leading to the dragging out of the story). Again, what should the press have done ?

Here's a question: There are THOUSANDS of child molestations that happen around the country every day...so how come the media only really focused on the ones done by priests ? Hmmm...could it be because the priests were SUPPOSED to be the GOOD guys, therefore the act was that much more shocking and people were that much more interested in finding out what happened ?

If the catholic church was a big supporter of the media than you would not hear a thing. Priests are supposed to be someone that you could go to provide comfort and guidance, not sexual abuse. They preyed on their victims trust and reverence. That's what makes it news. The liberal media wants Bush out and will stop at nothing to make that happen. As for Rather, he is at the top of this list. How many times does he say " In this Reporters Opinion". Even for yourself your Signiture Block tells it how your going to be slanted. You just say how many jobs were lost, not the reason why or whats going on now. Just provide the facts that you want to say. Even though it might be right it doesn't present the whole story. You want Bush out and will say only the negatives to get your point across.

Simply brushing the prisoner abuse scandal under the rug here would be the worst thing we could do. Why? Because no one else is going to. The story is still causing a hell of a lot of anger in Iraq that is not going to go away any time soon, and that has nothing to do with our coverage of it.

'News' is not made by our reaction to it: The impact is there, the question is whether we know about it or not.

Individuals being humiliated and tortured at the hands of U.S. soliders... Soliders kicking a ball to Iraqi kids. Yeah, you're right! I can see which is more important!

Civilians and soliders being killed. (You know, DEAD. As in, DEAD.) Girls going to school. Ah, once again, I can see which is more important!

Funny thing....the other day I followed a link to a negative story about President Bush. It was a very old story, from the year 2000. And it claimed there was little attention given to the story because of the biased conservative press led by CNN. Perception is everything.

During Bush's meeting with the pope, The Pope kept comparing the prisoner abuse scandal to 9/11. So apparantly the scandal has had a powerful impact here, and abroad.

1 - And this would differ from the prison scandal....how, exactly ? The US troops were supposed to be trusted and respected by those they were supposedly there to help, and instead we get torture and humiliation....so what's the difference ?

2 - I picked the name "Dan Rather" out of a hat, but I don't see what your problem is. I don't even watch him, but if he DOES say "In this reporter's opinion....", then what's the problem ? Should he lie and present his own opinions as "fair and balanced" like some other network I could mention ?

3 - Yes, I want Bush out...I love my country, and I don't think we can stand four more years of incompetence at the top with all that is going on in the world....So sue me. Does that make ANYTHING I've said factually inaccurate ? Let's pick a subject and focus on that for one minute. Let's pick Iraqi children.

I'm all for showing the troops playing soccer with the children, holding babies and watching the children going off to school, saving children from a fire bomb etc. I think that's wonderful, but we should ALSO see the dead, maimed and homeless children. There are thousands of maimed and dead children since the war started. Children that are being killed by coaliation forces and "insurgents", maybe even every single day. We all do know that Iraqis are being killed right? If you show one side, you have to show the other side, otherwise it is a biased report -- only showing one side to the story.

The "news" is often reported with a bias ... it's slanted to the left or to the right, it just depends on which coverage you watch or which newspaper you buy.

I heard George Soros compare the prisoner abuse scandal to 9/11 which was highly inappropriate. Soros is an Bush hating atheist,. The pope may have condemned it, which is what one would expect a pope to do. However since I posted this, I looked up the Vatican statement and it wasn't mentioned. In a press report it was briefly mentioned. More to the forefront was the pope's condemnation of the "self centered" society which wants abortion on demand and same sex unions".

You seem to be missing the point. This appears to be two-valued view of things. Why can't BOTH types of stories be reported?
