I coach a team of 8 year old girls and this week we had a BYE. Of course one of the girls asked why it's called a BYE. I was stumped. When I got home I searched around a bit for the answer. Nobody I talked to knew and I couldn't find any information on it anywhere.

So does anyone know why a no-game week is called a BYE??

I thought it was a BI week meaning it was skipping a week. Don't go by me though, I am not a big sports fan so i am just taking a stab, that's what I think it is:D

A week or so before your trip, how about sending a package to your daughter at home "from Mickey" with a small gift of some type a note saying he can't wait to see her. Or you can send something ahead to the resort where you will be staying and it will be waiting for her when you check in.

Um, sure ABCMom. :)

I think you are right Alex and Gail except that it's always written BYE like goodbye and not "by" like passing a week by.

Just as I thought I was learning something, ABC Mom throws me a curve. Maybe this was meant for another question...:teeth: Or maybe I am easily confused.:p

I always thought it was "buy" as in they get a freebie this week.

I watch a lot of tennis on tv. Frequently, the top seeds will be get a "bye" which means they advance to another round without playing an opponent..

Don't know why they use the term "bye" though.

From FactMonster.com

It still doesn't explain why the word was chosen!

Sports.in a tournament, the preferential status of a player or team not paired with a competitor in an early round and thus automatically advanced to play in the next round: The top three seeded players received byes in the first round.

The following is from the MSN online dictionary

bye [ b ] (plural byes)
noun

sports automatic advance to next round: the right to proceed to the next round of a competition without contesting the present round, often through nonappearance of an opponent
