If someone borrows your vehicle...

If I borrowed someone's van and it was empty, I'd return it with some fuel in it as a thanks for the loan of their van. I would not call to complain that it was empty. I would have told her there wasn't any fuel in it so she wouldn't run out accidentally.

Lol, ok next time I am watching 4 kids, preparing dinner for DW and get an unexpected call to borrow the van I'll make sure to remember to let the person know how much fuel is in the van. I am going to call her later in the day to apologise for not letting her know over the phone about its level.

On second thought No I won't... ;)

Of course you don't have to call and apologize to her (where did anyone on this thread say you should :confused3). Even if what you did warranted an apology what your friend did certainly negated it.

If I had borrowed your van, I would have filled up the tank. She was extremely rude. So, what happened when she returned it?

For those saying you would fill it do up you realize on average these days its $80 to $100 to fill a mini van?

For the 30 mile trip I would think $20 to even $30 would be good to replace the gas and as a thank you.

I drive a minivan-the most I have paid to fill it up was $55. I would have still filled up the OP's van if I had asked to borrow the van. It's just the polite thing to do. It's also still less expensive then renting a U-Haul.

And in my city it's $89.99 to rent a minivan for the day. $103.26 including tax. And that doesn't include the gas you'd have to buy before turning it in.

You shoudl have said "Well, in the future it will probably be better if you borrow someone else's car at the last minute because I don't keep my tank filled constantly on the off chance that someone may need to borrow it".

Snarky??? Absolutely. But snarky is a good respnose to rude, which she was.

Actually I filled it up on Friday and it cost me $91 to do that. $20 would have been fair, but when she returned it we didn't offer them a drink like we normally would of. In fact I made sure I was busy and let DW handle the conversation.

I'll check the thread again later, in the mean time its back to Shelf building I go!

We need the rest of the story! How much gas did it have when she returned it?

I would so not let her borrow it again. She has some nerve wanting to ride out your gas taking care of her business and has the nerve to complain about there being no gas:confused3, She needs to get a grip and rent a truck the next time:rolleyes1

I agree that your friend was rude. We have friends who are very close to us and we occaissonally borrow their van for big hauls- but I give their teen daughter my car as replacement while I use the van and always fill it more than where I recieved it. I borrowed it last to pick up plants that were too big for a car trunk. Round trip was less than 7 miles. The only time I didn't add more to the gas tank was when I borrowed it for a movie trip for my daughter's bday. I had 5 kids total. At the last minute my friend sent her 15 yr old with us to the movie and since I paid for her I didn't think it necessary to add to the gas tank. Round trip was around 5 miles.

Is it assumed that you are supposed to have fuel in it? Or is it assumed that they will put there own fuel in it?

I ask this because I am busy cooking dinner for my wife, and a friend called and asked if she could use our van to pick up an item at a store that would not fit in her car in the next city over, about a 30 mile round trip. My gas light came on on our way home from visiting my MIL in the hospital this morning, and I didn't want to stop for fuel because I have a large meal planned.

Our friends called and complained about the van being on empty! She then said she put $7 in it!!! lol, gas is about $1.37 a litre here right now, ( $5.20 a gallon) my math tells me it will come back with even less fuel than was in it.

In your Humble opinion what should I have said? Sorry I'll give you some money for gas? Lol

Every time I have loaned my van (Boy Scouts or Church) they cleaned it and filled it up before returning it.

It cost me $40 to fill my neighbor's car after we used it for the driving test.

It would have cost me $150 to have a driving school take him and use their car.

I saved a fortune.

Common knowledge is that if you borrow something (anything) you return it in the same or better condition than when you took it. If I would have borrowed your minivan (although I am wayyy to cool to drive a grocery getter ), you would have had at least a half a tank of gas when I got done.
