We planned a once in a lifetime trip to Disneyland for May of this year....Im a little worried but at this point cant cancel everything so should I be worried?

According to the CDC, the first dose is 95 percent effective. We are in the same boat, all though going to San Diego. Our doctor said he should be fine and I need to not worry about it and just enjoy :) He did give my husband and I boosters...

Your doctor should be able to give you the best answer. Jennilou is correct; the info I've read states that the first dose provides immunity to about 95% of recipients.

DO you take your son to Costco? The Mall? Any place with a variety of people? Your chances there are just as likely. The big story really is an infected person went to DIsneyland in mid December with a highly contagious disease (95% of unvaxed persons who enter the same area will develop the disease) when there were 80,000 people, and only 30 or so people became infected. (There were an additional 30-40 infected by those people, caused by them going to places like school, Costco, doctor's offices while ill.) This shows how well vaccines do work. This was something that back in the 60's would have caused 40,000 people to become ill.

So, no, I would not have a problem taking him or the rest of the family to Disneyland.

I'm planning to bring my 1 year old in May. He has had one dose of the MMR as well. I'm not that worried about him getting Measles at Disneyland.

I really wasnt that concerened until Disneyland started to say young kids shouldnt come and I saw Disneyland emplyees getting it. We talked to his Dr and she said it shouldnt be a problem

They were saying those that are NOT vaccinated should not come. Anyone under 1 cannot recieve the vaccine. As long as your child or anyones child under 4 has had their first dose they should be fine.

I will be there at the end of February with my 3 yr old. I've spoken to his pedi and she is more concerned with the flu, which he coincidentally has now. She said I can have a titers run on him and/or get the booster now if I want.

My son had his 1st round of mmr vaccine early this month. I've scheduled his 2nd round 4 weeks after the first since we well be in disneyland end of February. Anyone talked to their dr about this? I talked to a nurse that was kind of an idiot and didn't know that the cdc website says they can have the 2nd vaccine a minimum of 4 weeks later. I'm second guessing myself :confused3

I haven't, but this was in the news here this summer because of an outbreak. Someone brought their infected child into the maternity ward of a local hospital. It was fairly widely publicised that you could ask to get the second shot early if you were in one of the outbreak areas.

I called our doctor about getting YDS his 2nd dose before our trip in a few weeks. YDS is 3 and his doctor told us we would be fine to go, with only the first dose. He said that the only time they really consider giving the 2nd dose early, is if there is an outbreak where we live.

You're going to have to talk to the Dr. Nurses don't seem to know anything. My Dr's nurse said the same thing, and when I brought it up to my Dr she said we could do his second dose if I wanted to, but we shouldn't need it until it's scheduled.

If you're son just had his first dose he should be perfectly fine. I wouldn't get them THAT close. My son had his 2 years ago, he's 3 now, so doing it 1 year early vs. 3 years early is a big difference in my opinion. But that is just MY opinion. You should be fine given that he has JUST had his first dose.

Edited to add, I would consider a titers to check immunities before jumping straight to the second dose.

My son is 3 so he has only had the one dose so far. We just got back from a trip to DL a couple weeks ago. The first dose is 95% effective. I was not worried about it and I am not hesitant to go back before his next dose. We'll be going again in June and he still will only have had one dose then. If you're truly worried about it you could ask his Dr. about moving his 2nd dose up or have them run a blood test to see if he has an immunity built up or not. Technically he should be covered with just the one dose.

It was my understanding that the first MMR is given at 1 year but the second one can't be given until they are 4. At least that's what my doctor told me yesterday, as I was asking her about it regarding my 3 year old son. If you're worried about the first one being effective, I would request they check the titer testing. It's a simple blood test to show their immunity against the virus.

I have a feeling Dr's tell you this because if you get it earlier, and the immunities wear off you have to get another one. The CDC website says you can get them 28 days apart. When I mentioned that to my sons pedi she very quickly said, if this is something you want we can do it, or we can test his titers, it's up to you. This was after her nurse told me absolutly not.

Having said that, a 3 yr old got their first round 2 years ago. If their immunities drop, it starts to drop around the third year, which would put them at 4 and that is why they give the second dose then. I've also seen some Dr's say you can't overdose on the MMR, and it should be up to you if you want that second dose now or later.

Not true. Per the CDC 28 days is all that is needed:

School-Aged Children (Grades Kindergarten through 12)
The second dose of MMR vaccine is recommended routinely for all children aged 4 through 6 years before entering kindergarten or first grade. However, the second dose of MMR vaccine can be administered at an earlier age if the interval between the first and second dose is more than 28 days.
