would I just look for pretty dinner plates to put up like from Pier 1?

You can just shop for pretty plates where ever you see them or start a collection from your travels. I started collecting plates a couple of years ago when an Italian friend brought me one back from her vacation. I recently moved into a new house and when hanging my plates in the new kitchen I realized I was a plate short to fill the new wall space, so I went shopping until I found a plate I like. As it turned out I came across a pretty hand painted plate in Kohl's.

Sure, anything you like (and that will fit the standard size plate hangers you buy at the hardware store!) I don't have plates in my kitchen (no wall space) but I have six in my dining room - it's one of my "good" china patterns and I love seeing it up on the wall!! I have 18 dinner plates, so I rarely have to take one off the wall, even if I am having a lot of company!!!!

DVC Liz - Are they all the same pattern?
Yes, they are. It's a pretty "fancy" pattern, with gold rims, a deep rose band, and a central floral pattern. My walls are painted a solid color, very close to the rose color of the plates. I think it looks pretty!!!!

You could have different ones, though, if they all had a main color or type of pattern in common. I have a friend who has four differnet plates in her kitchen - they are all differnet, but have colors in common.

I went to antique stores & found plates for my plate rack....they don't match, but look beautiful! Just a suggestion. :)

I have many plates that I display in my kitchen. I rotate which ones are up a few times a year as well as having several holiday themed plates that go up.

I am partial to the color blue so the plates I put up are different pattens and sizes but all have blue & white as the colors.

I love the way they look. :flower:

Are the plates secure on the wall? I would be afraid they would easily fall.

JanetRose - There are special plate hangers that are really quite secure. Think of an elongated letter X - made of tightly coiled wire that will stretch, like a spring. Each "leg" of the X attaches to the plate - the two top pieces hook over the top of your plate, and the two bottom pieces hook under the bottom of your plate. The places where the ends "hook" are curved or bent to fit the rim of the plate, and they are covered with little soft plastic "stuff" (sorry for the technical term there!) so your plate is protected from metal touching it.
Once you have your plate trussed up, so to speak, you hang it on the wall by first putting up a picture hanging hook - the same ones you use to hang a picture. You only need one, for the smallest weight - not a big one like you'd need if you were hanging a mirror or a portrait. There's an attachment on the back of the "X' that has a place to hook onto the wall.

And there you are - nice and safe and tightly held!!!! Mine have withstood slamming doors, dogs and children running, and the demolition of the room next door just this morning!!! So I hope that answers your questions!!!!
