If I want to upgrade to a cabin that was sold out when booking

i have a GTY ocean view 9B for next year’s Western TA. The cabins I would have booked were all gone by the end of September. After checking on Cruisefish, I saw that the prices for these verandas were very comparable to my 9B. If next year was anything like this year, some will open up closer to the PIF date. Will I be able to upgrade at the rate they sold out at when I booked my GTY or will I be stuck with the rate they are priced at when released?

The price to change staterooms will be based on the current prevailing rate, not the price they were when you booked.

You will be able to book (on the same cruise) an upgrade for what that cabin cost on the day you originally booked your current cabin. If you add someone to your cabin or to a new cabin those prices would be at the current rate. Or if you change to a new cruise date you would pay the current cruise price.

But, not sure how it works if you booked your original cabin on a special rate like an OGT.

I booked GTY with a placeholder. I posed the question because there seems to be a lot of confusion.

A “regular” GTY — which is a specific category without a room selected — can be upgraded. Upgrade will be based on fares as of the initial booking date. You mention you have a 9B GTY; this can be upgraded if you so desire.

A special offer *GT cannot be upgraded in advance of the cruise. No changes allowed. It can be upgraded on embarkation at the port (pending availability).

Enjoy your cruise!

I changed from one category to another on the same sailing and the rate was the the one in effect on the date of the original booking. If I changed to a different cruise the rate would have been the date of the change, since I was considering that also.

Finally, got, through and the cast member told me I would pay the new price. When I told her I thought otherwise, she went to check with a supervisor and I was right. It is the fare in place when you book. No wonder there is so much confusion when employees aren’t sure of the rules.

But how do they know what the fare in place was if it was sold out?

I'm definitely not the expert, but I thought I've read other posts saying that if you change cabins you get the rate that was in effect when you initially booked.

My bad. I thought it was prevailing rate.

Well done!☺☺☺☺

I just realized something (that I should have when first reading the post as I do it ALL. THE. TIME.)... You can actually go into your reservation on the DCL site, click on "change reservation" (assuming you didn't use a TA, which since you're doing the legwork on it I'm guessing you didn't - I usually haven't) and it will show you the rate that you would pay. If you decide NOT to change at that point, just click "cancel" which just keeps everything as is. No harm, no foul - and no need to deal with the call center.
