I can only get a guarantee not a room assignment. Is it possible I will show up and they not have a room for us???

This is freaking me out.

Thank you all for your patience with all my questions.

Guarantees on a cruise are not like reservations-without-seat-assignments on airplanes. They're more like standard "run-of-house" reservations at hotels. Generally, cruise lines do not over-book (though it has happened recently, in Baltimore), so you're almost assured a cabin. In most cases, you'll even know which cabin you are assigned beforehand.

What catagory are you booked for? Most guarantee reservations I have seen have resulted in a free upgrade. I hioe that's the case for you!

The guarantee status usually means that they have oversold that category. With the ship that either means that you will be in that category or receive a free upgrade. :)

We were hoping for a free upgrade when we had our guarantee, but alas, we ended up with the very worst cabin in the category of our guarantee: The bottom-most passenger deck, all-the-way forward (seemingly right next to the anchor!), with a smaller and more obstructed porthole than even the cabin right next to ours.

From what I've read, though, sometimes you can get very lucky.

We booked a guarantee for our Princess cruise in Oct. Cheapest room rate was not lowest category (some expedia special). Booked the interior. Days before, discovered we had been upgraded to oceanview. Pleasantly surprised when we got there, HUGE window. Plus location--lowest level, center, right by the stairs was terrific!
If you want to go, room probably isn't that big of a deal. It was more fun for me because I just love to get a good deal!
Happy cruising!

This is inkkognito on hubby's PC:

DCL is not as generous with the "guarantee" upgrades as other cruise lines. The only way to guarantee a "guarantee" upgrade is to book four people into a Cat. 12 room. Since there are no Cat. 12s that will sleep four, you will get at least an 11. But still, you could end up in a 10 or 9 in a noisy area of the ship.

I have always been leary of doing a guarantee stateroom. Especially with Disney. I can see why now.

There may be other categories for which this is true, but I'm just familiar with 8's mostly--but 8's are on just three decks, all toward the front of the ship, none underneath anything that would render them "noisy" rooms, so an 8 Guarantee doesnt have much downside (except for the time we got bumped up to a 5 but didnt like the solid wall and there was no Steamer trunk in 7132, but it was still a verandah of some kind and of some use).

But yes, the interpretation of guarantee is that you will be in AT LEAST that category, or higher (higher meaning, ironically, a lower number).

For the most part cruiselines do not oversell, so there should be no bumping.

I have heard of a couple of cases of people being bumped (not DCL) when there was a problem on board and several cabins were taken out of service at the last minute (water pipe breaks, floods several cabins etc.) At that point it would be those booked in those cabins who would be bumped if other cabins weren't available so it would not matter whether or not you had a GTY or an assigned room.
