If girls can be princesses, can boys dress up too?

We were at WDW last week as well and saw LOTS of boys in costume (many of which were in the Captain Jack Sparrow getup, complete with the huge dreadlocked hat, long sleeves, and long pants in the 90 degree heat!)

My DS6 (as well as my DD2) wore a custom character outfit every day of our trip. The kids LOVED the attention the CMs, characters, and the other guests gave them. DH & I dressed up too (because we're Disney dorks!)

Children are allowed to wear costumes in the parks. This is not limited to female children. Adults are not permitted to be in costume except at the MK Halloween party.

My son will be dressed as Captain Hook on our Pirate's League Day and Prince Charming on our CRT day (assuming we get reservations as planned). I will have a change of clothes for him for whenever he no longer wishes to be dressed that way.

We always let our daughter wear her princess and fairy costumes to Disney because there are always so many girls that have done BBB and just dress up. Today, as I was packing, I realized that I never think to pack the boys' costumes like Lightning McQueen, the super heroes, etc. Are the boys allowed to dress up outside of the MNSSHP like little girls?

Nevermind any other issues brought up in this thread. I am trying to figure out how the heck a Lightning McQueen costume would work.

(I mean, is it a big boxy thing? Is it like those crazy Disney on Ice Nemo costumes? Is it an anthropomorphized car with, like, tire hands or something? Or is it a lame cop-out like those "big bag with a picture of the character on the front, cheap plastic mask" deals from when we were kids?)

It's a jumpsuit and is fashioned to be a pit crew member.

Do these kids really want to be dressed up all day?
(before you go into auto-defense mode, which I suspect some of you will, please consider what I'm asking here - are the kids really enjoying this?)

From me thinking back to when I was a kid the last thing I'd want to do is to dress up in anything but shorts and a shirt at the Magic Kingdom. I asked my sister about it and she was on the same page with me.

So at the risk of being slammed for this: Is this a deal where the kids are actually asking for it (I could see this more with the girls than the boys) or is this a deal where the Moms want to dress up their little princesses?

To me the costumes look like they might be fun on Halloween but all day long at a theme park I'd only think: itchy and hot - I don't really want to draw attention to myself.

I asked my daughters about this, too (17yo and 24yo). Neither expressed any interest, now or in the past, of ever dressing up like a princess - well, except on Halloween and I think they'd both prefer to be Zombie-Princess (one was dead-cheerleader one year! - "Daddy - would you do my makeup?"). Both were on board with the comfort shorts/shirts scenario.

The fact that the boy never asked for it is telling to me.

Now, if the kid really wants to do it and really enjoys it I have no beef with that. Let them have a ball. They're not hurting anyone. I just look at it and wonder if it's something like that 'Toddlers in Tiaras'-show that is happening.

As Craig Furgunson would say: I look forward to reading your letters.

My DD who is 2.5 begs to wear her princess dresses everywhere. We are local so we go a lot. I finally made her lightweight cotton versions of all the princess dresses because it bothered me, not because it bothered her. She still would prefer her big fancy versions but sometimes I just say no if it is a very hot day.

Oops, forgot to address the actual topic. I've seen boys in the parks dressed up. Pirates definitely seem to be the favorite but I have also seen little mickey's, peter pans, and cars outfits.

I've seen a lot of Buzz Lightyear in the younger set.

My boys dressed as Indiana Jones for our HS day this past trip and were treated to front row seats for the Indy show and a meeting with Indy and Marion after the show. They love Indy so this was QUITE the treat for them!! :cool1::thumbsup2

For sure boys can dress up if they want to!

However, I've never let my son dress up regularly down there. My reasoning is it seems like he would be sooooo HOT! Most of the little girl costumes are nice short sleeve dresses, but all of my son's costumes that he likes to play in (buzz, spiderman, captain america, etc) are long sleeve, pants and hoods/masks! IMO, it's just too hot for him to wear something like that all day!

So, he'll be dressed in his full Captain America costume for the MNSSHP, but for the rest of the week, I had short sleeve tees made with all of his favorite characters so he can be more comfortable!!!

Just back. There were PLENTY of little pirates, buzz lightyears, Mr. Incredibles, etc around the parks (and not just in MK on a party night).

I would let a boy dress up but take a pair of shorts and t-shirt along. Like a PP said, so many of those costumes are so hot!
