If a pool wasn't opened last year, what can I expect to find?

We may be buying the home across the street from us. It has a built in pool. That pool was not opened at all last year. Assuming no structural damage for the moment, what can I expect to find if I do open it? How much in service to get it up to snuff for this year? And how much does it cost to run all summer?

I have never owned a big pool before.

Before you sign a contract for the house, get a licensed pool contractor to inspect it. If it was closed properly, it should be fine; I know of pools that have stayed closed for years and years (but the service contractor checked on them every year) with no change.

Is it drained or just covered? Is it heated? My parents used to curse our pool. It was heated and very expensive to maintain.

Regardless of not being opened, hire a licensed pool inspector to do a good check. Pools are great, but can be very expensive. Our pool is around 25 years, last summer, we had to have it relined, all the lines, decking, fence, etc replaced. It cost $85k.

$85,000! Holy crap! I think I would have filled it in and bought an above ground! LOL
Probably would have saved at least $70,000!

Do you mean $8,500? If not, that must be a huge deck or fence......LOL. We had a complete pool (16 X 32--so very large--special design also) put in with waterfalls and decking for less than $30,000. It wasn't a liner either; it was diamondbrite.
