I had to laugh when we were planning our trip last fall when DS was 20 mo old. I had called SWA to ask some questions and mentioned about our buying a ticket for my son. She said because he was under 2 that I didn't need to, he could just sit on my lap for the flight. I burst out laughing and said, "Lady, if my son is not strapped down in a 5 point harness in his car seat he will be all over your plane!!!". (Really he is an absolute angel, just on the go all the time).
Anyways, I did pack a backpack just for him with snacks, drinks, soothers, blankies, new books, new toys...and he ended up sleeping from 10 minutes after take off to 10 minutes before we landed, go figure. The ride home he was awake a little more but still slept for most of the trip.
I have read that window clingers work good if they have the window seat.
