Ideas/ Tips/ Advice for a terminally ill guest

Does anyone have any tips, ideas, advice or first hand experience for a young Mom who is terminally ill. She was denied a DAS pass and is renting a scooter because she can’t stand longer than 5 minutes. Is there a different line they can get in? Will she have to sit out while they ride? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you!

If the issue is solved with a mobility device, DAS won’t be issued so that was correct. She uses all the normal lines everyone else uses, CM will notify her if she needs to use a different one or if she needs to transfer to a Disney provided wheelchair as ECVs are not allowed in some lines. CM will tell her where to park her ECV/wc before boarding and where it will be if the ride doesn’t drop her off in the same place.

The ECV is already an extra cost (and good call, you can end up standing in so many random places for more than 5 minutes at Disney) but I would give serious consideration to some MPLL, like for MK & DHS.

First, sending my care and concern for this mom and her family and friends. I hope the magical experiences on the vacation give everyone a lift and help them all make memories that will console them and that will give her joy in the time she has.

The cast members will work hard to make sure she can do everything. As the previous poster said, most lines accommodate mobility devices, so she shouldn't have to be denied access to anything that she is strong enough to ride. You can also focus on shows and experiences for her, stopping for entertainment, going to the American Adventure show, seeing the Festival of the Lion King, and so forth. These things are less stressful and give everyone a chance to be entertained without any physical requirements or demands like getting onto a ride might have.

These are a really a big help and for us, worth the price. We just eat less expensive meals to cover the cost. You can now also book some times ahead with it.

And note ~ she can bring the scooter in the line with her right up until she rides. A few she might have to switch to a wheelchair and someone pushes her. But she does not have to get in line walking.

You can talk to the CM at the ride entrance if you think there is a line she can not do but she wants to do the ride they may let a member of your party to wait in line then when they get to the merge point the person can call the mom and she can go in the LL to meet up with the person waiting.

For someone who is terminally ill you may want to at least explore Premier Pass. It’s significantly more expensive even than LLMP but you can ride what you want (once), whenever you want, rather than having to fight for LLs on popular rides. For a trip that may literally be one and done where it is all about creating the best memories possible for a family, it could be worth it.

Make sure mom is okay with using a scooter. I strongly suggest practicing in the stores like Walmart. Then, head to a local zoo and see how she does for the day. Unfortunately, you will find people darting out in front of a scooter passing by and you have to have strong reflexes to stop. No one is doing this on purpose, but everyone is caught up in their own moments and it just happens. She may need help getting the scooter on and off Disney transportation if you are using such. This may even require someone else to take over the scooter for this part. Some ride ques have a lot of twists and turns which requires a lot of steering and she may need extra help. Watch the battery level of the scooter; there's a gauge. Practice battery conservation by shutting the scooter off when watching a show, parade, or fireworks. You may have to do some battery charging in the park depending on how long you choose to be in the park. If you get a bigger scooter, they should have two batteries and those last longer without recharging. Make sure to recharge the scooter everyday day in your room.
