Wife and I are planning a trip to WDW in October of next year with 3 kids (11, 8, 5). Savings/planning has been in full swing since July 2015. We'd like to tell the kids as part of their Christmas excitement this year. Wife and kids are travelling out of town while I work during Christmas and will be coming home on New Year's Eve. I'd like to have something planned at the house for them when they come home to surprise them. Possibly a gift that they can each unwrap at the same time that gives away the surprise. Any ideas on what I can set up while they are away? Things you may have done? Things to purchase ahead of time to get them excited?

Get a few balloons (disney themed)
Put them in a box and wrap it, let them open it and then say We're going to Disney World!!!

We did tee shirts one year that we wrapped. The tee shirts said "I'm going to Disneyworld".

First trip they came home from school to find a gift bag with small.Disney related things inside. I had written on a card for each with 'Surprise we're going to Disneyland'. They said 'cool', then started doing their usual after school things like taking lunch boxes out of school bags etc. I was killing myself with laughter and said 'are you going to ask any questions?' Eldest said 'When are we going?' I said 'Tomorrow'. THAT floored them ;) To be fair we had been discussing it for some time beforehand.

Second trip. I surprised them on New Years Day with a Disney themed tee to unwrap along with a travel plan. They had two weeks to get used to the idea.

Because your trip is far off, you could do monthly little surprises leading up to October. Or give them each a calendar that they could mark off the days. Whatever you do, the surprise is well worth the look on their faces :D

Awesome ideas. Does anyone have a link or know a post where I can request a We're going to Disney Ticket or Template?.

For our 8 and 5 year old, my wife had photo books made of stock photos of the airport, plane, villa, and WDW photos on snapfish. She of course put some captions in the books as well. They each will be unwrapping that on Christmas morning along with some Magic Bands (we take off Mid-Jan). :)

So I ended up buying the new 2016 WDW shirts available from Disney Shop. I wrapped each one of them and gave them to the kids at the same time. At first, they were delighted just to get a Disney shirt, so they didn't connect the dots until we told them they could wear their new shirts when we go to WDW. All in all, it was a pretty good surprise and I videoed the whole thing on my phone future viewing. And we changed our trip dates to end of May/early June so less months of kids hounding us with when are we going to go questions.

We did an "Elf on the Shelf" inspired count-down. Starting at 50 days, we would bring out some Disney souvenirs or stuffies from previous trips and display them with a countdown number somewhere in the house (old resort mugs on the table with a 48 on them, mickey ears on a shelf with a 47, etc). They really enjoyed the mystery of trying to find the new number each day and figure out what the countdown might be for. Surprisingly, it took my 8 year olds much longer then I thought it would to figure out what was going on.

We told our kids and nieces and nephew with a large gift. I wrapped a large box with a lift off lid with disney Christmas wrapping paper. I made a countdown chain for my youngest DN who was 11 and attached it to the inside of the lid with a card at the end that said "We're going to Disney ". So, when they opened the box the chain came up, out of the box and they had to keep pulling until the whole thing was out. They loved it and DN had a cool count down chain for the trip.

We didn't tell our kids until we pulled up to Disney World last Friday. It was an awesome reaction from them both. They had no idea.

We just told our kids this morning! I made a scavenger hunt and at every clue there were puzzle pieces. When all clues and pieces were collected there was the message "we are going too....", then I handed them each a bag with their ears, a new shirt, and lanyards and pins on it. My oldest got it pretty quick. Her first guess was disneyland but I said nope, Disneyworld!!

My wife wants to tell then kids the morning we leave for the airport. That sounds fun but so does giving the. Two weeks to wallow in the idea and learn about WDW. I'm mixed in the ideas.

We are planning our first trip so I agree they should have some of the fun of planning and getting excited. I want them to help with planning our days so we will tell them before the 60 days. I think a scavenger hunt with clues sounds perfect.

We are taking my two nieces to WDW (ages 14 and 11) for Spring Break. We broke the news to them via their Christmas stockings on Christmas morning (with my brother and sis in law's blessing). Most of their stocking gifts were travel related (rain ponchos, tiny hand sanitizers, new toothbrush, gel pens with little notebook, socks). The last gift was a large envelope with a wrapped Disney gift card taped to it. When they opened the gift card, the youngest one began to suspect something. She looked at me with a glint in her eye. The older one was still clueless. The little one ripped open the envelope to find a copy of our flight information as well as our itinerary for the week (I always create a spreadsheet with ADRs, park hours, fp reservations, etc.). She started hooting and hollering. It took a while for her sister to catch on. Maybe she was just really tired that morning? They were both super excited and have maintained that excitement level since. Christmas day was exactly 99 days until we leave for Florida.

For our kids, 3-4 months is the sweet spot for when to tell them. Enough time that they can still be involved in the planning, but not so long as to make it out of reach. Since Christmas, we have talked about the trip every time I have seen them. They are also visiting Disney web sites regularly to investigate changes since our last visit and suggest things for us to do. We have never "surprised" the kids with a trip the last minute. In our case, that would cause too much stress. For example, the oldest one is in band and they have solo/ensemble competitions right after we return. Even now she is planning practice sessions with others on her team not to include the dates we are gone. And, I see how much they enjoy the planning process and I wouldn't want to take that away from them!

We just revealed the surprise on the Sunday after Christmas. We have a family trip planned with cousins. My DW took 4 boxes placed a Disney balloon in each one and wrapped them in Christmas paper. Each balloon had a note on the string. 1st box was unwrapped that said "guess where" 2nd balloon "we are" 3rd balloon "Going" 4th Balloon " in 24 days?" It was funny to watch the 4 of them process the notes and balloons as they opened the boxes and the balloons floated to the ceiling. And all at once the mayhem started as they all figured it out and started screaming, and hugging, and jumping up and down "were going to Disney World, were going to Disney World" it was really priceless. We are all traveling together which is going be a blast. Now if we can just get through the next 7 days.....
