My DS 2nd grade class is doing a book exchange for the end of year party per teacher's request. Any good ideas for a book boy/girl going into 3rd. Limit was set at $10. Nothing too heavy...looking for something fun. It is summer vacation : ) Thanks for any ideas.

I would suggest any book in the Dinosaurs series by Jane Yolen and Mark Teague. They are easy, fun reads that teach manners in a fun way. They are perfect for the age group.

My DSs (1 in 5th grade, one in 3rd grade) really like the "Diary of a Wimpy Kid"series. Also, both like the "Percy Jackson and the Olympians" series.

Thanks so much! I am going to check them out online. He is my youngest so i cant remember what was age appropriate. It it definitely helps to ask the dis experts : )

Goosebumps? I've never read any of them but my son enjoys them. I second the recommendation of the Wimpy Kid series.

We picked up Dork Diaries this weekend for my daughter. She stated it was the same author as the wimpy kid series only for girls but I didn't double check.

My second grader, soon to be 3rd grader likes Magic Tree house series, BabyMouse series, and Fudge books.

I asked my DS8 if he thought of any books and he also mentioned the Diary of Wimpy Kid. I saw the hardcover books in bjs a while back for only $8. But i now have a nice list to check out when i go to the book store so thanks for that!

DD is a big fan of Magic Tree House. Good luck!

Half Magic! Older book, great for boys or girls, and not something they will already have (my ds owns every title mentioned so far - LOVES books!).

I picked this up on a whim at B&N and my ds read it in 3 days, passed it around to his friends, and asked me for others in the series. I've had a few moms also comment that they have picked up the rest of the books because of borrowing the 1st one. Great read!!!

A noted by a PP just about all of these titles are ones kids this age have likely already read.

Half Magic would be a good choice and less likely to have already been read by a child. Also any of the lesser known Roald Dahl books (he wrote Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and the Giant Peach, Matilda, etc), such as: The Twits, the BFG or Danny the Champion of the World.

Another idea would be to get an activity style book of summer ideas or a cookbook for kids, etc instead of a novel.

I teach 3rd grade and I would second this. The only problem is some parents don't like their kids reading Diary of a Wimpy kid and Percy Jackson is going to only work for the higher readers. Magic Treehouse and Bailey School Kids are favorites that the level would work for most kids. Too bad you don't have girls- the Fairy series is crazy big with my girls!

I am surprised they are doing a book exchange. Any kind of exchange is banned from our district b/c some kids can't afford it and/or the parents aren't tuned in enough to participate. And, I teach in Scottsdale, which is notoriously "high income."

Magic Treehouse
baby Mouse
Bone graphic novels ( hugely popular with the third graders at my school)

Thanks for the suggestions. We were going for The Wimpy Kid books but ended up with a new Magic Treehouse Games and Puzzles book which just came out April 2010. I figured chances are whoever picks it wont have it. It has tons and games and puzzles tied in with the Magic Treehouse characters and can provide lots of summer fun.
