Every year Grandma and Grandpa make gingerbread houses for all the kids and they decorate them themselves. I'm looking for different idea's on candy for the decorations. We have the usually m'm's, kisses, candy canes, chocolate santa's, smarties and so on. Anyone else have any idea's for something different?

Thanks, Annette

When my son was in 7th grade, they had to make a gingerbread house to scale of their own house for their math class. Since we had a hot tub in the backyard, we used one of those waffle bowls and filled it up with blue jelly bellys. Also upside down sugar cones covered in icing make really good trees. Also marshmallow snowmen. We used red licorice nubs(the thick short ones) to look like red bricks.

Big Red gum makes great shingles for your roof! Just snip them into thirds with regular scissors and they look (and smell!) great.

I think most things have been covered - we've only done it once at a parent-child class. (Too much candy for us to do at home  )
mini gum drops are cute to just decorate
Bubble tape for toboggans
gummi bears for "people" (& I saw someone "shingle" their roof with them)
Square pretzels for windows
Necco wafers for the roof (were really cute when layered)
peppermint stick for a flag pole/barber pole/etc

That's all I can think of now.

we usually use left over candy from halloween. if you check your library you can find some really nice books on this subject with great idea's and pictures. :sunny:

I have a stoneware gingerbread house mold. I chill it and use the white baking chocolate to make the walls and roof. Then I put it together with more melted chocolate. For a cute gift, make the roof removable and fill with candies.

Just a different twist.

My mum had some plastic reindeer cake decorations last year so I used melted sugar to seal them to the roof.

I love this idea! I always say that I'm going to try and make a gingerbread house, but I never get around to it. I'm really going to try this year. And my daughter would just love doing it!!!

Anyone got any pics of ones they have done?

I used to make these when my kids were little, and all I used were frosted ginger cookies that came in small square shapes. I just hot glued everything to a box shape I had preplanned, and added all the decorations from leftover candy from Halloween.

One thing I can think of is that you can buy candy that looks like rocks and use it for a walk-way to the house. I think I used frosted mini wheats for the roofs of my houses, and I also used peppermint candy canes outside the houses for lamp posts. Another thing that would be cute for a house is that red, white and green "reindeer corn" I"ve seen. I used those licorice strips to frame out windows (the red ones--dont' know the name of them).

This year I'm doing something similar. I found at the Wonder Bread store packages of pink-iced gingerbread planks in a box for $3. I think there are 12 planks in the box, so that should be enough for a house. My Wonder Bread store sells bread at a discounted price and also the other Wonder Bread products, so there might be one in your area.

CVS has their candy for 88 cents a bag, and you should be able to find some things to use for decorations.

Have fun and good luck!

I didn't read back through this, but just remembered that we also used Teddy Grahams for mini gingerbread men.
