Nope. My dd, now 14, has never shown ID...well, let's say she has never been asked to show ID. She started bringing her school ID, but that was completely her idea, not the airlines! Your kids will be fine with no ID.
I tend to have a touch of Travel Induced OCD DS is 10, and has been flying since he was 5. I usually have a copy of his birth certificate with me, but we've never been asked for it. Except for one skycap at curbside at Logan. He was having a great time, and asked DS, "Young Sir, do you have your ID?" We had just gotten a school picture/lost child ID, so DS pulled that out. The skycap played right along.
But generally speaking, you won't need anything for the little ones.
No identification is required for any passenger flying within the US until age 18. At 18 or older passengers need a government-issued ID - drivers' license, passport, etc.
Thanks everyone! Our girls were born in Guatemala, and we have sent the copies of their birth certificates to the US CIS in order to get certificates of citizenship for them. I was starting to worry as we would have to drive an extra 3 hours one-way to get copies of them b/c of the adoptions. Now I can go pack and relax!
