Hey everyone! I am flying for the first time in February to WDW for the princess half marathon. I have been researching everything that me and hubby need. I have been told by someone that we would need passports to fly from cincinnati. We have ky license that we thought would be used as our ids to get thru security. However I have came across some news articles saying that ky license would not pass as ids. Can someone please help me? I am freaking out cause I know it takes like 4 weeks to get a passport. Do we need them? Should we get them just in case? Or what?

Please help! Thank you!

The way I read it, not until 2016.

I always fly with just my License. Was the person that told you a Disney Bus Driver? :joker: just kidding you should be ok. I would google it so you feel better about it.

I found some articles referring to everyone needing a STAR ID to clear security starting December 1, 2014. However, I've only found the articles coming out of Alabama. I found another article stating the STAR ID requirement is being delayed until 2016.

I've also heard talk on cruisecritic about certain states not having "enchanced" their DL, but I don't remember Kentucky being listed as one of them. According to TSA.gov:

Acceptable IDs for screening purposes include:

U.S. passport
U.S. passport card
DHS trusted traveler cards (Global Entry, NEXUS, SENTRI, FAST)
U.S. military ID (active duty or retired military and their dependents, and DoD civilians)
Permanent resident card
Border crossing card
DHS-designated enhanced driver's license
Driver's licenses or other state photo identity cards issued by Department of Motor Vehicles (or equivalent) for the sole purpose of identification
Native American tribal photo ID
HSPD-12 PIV card
Airline or airport-issued ID (if issued under a TSA-approved security plan)
Foreign government-issued passport
Canadian provincial driver's license or Indian and Northern Affairs Canada card
Transportation Worker Identification Credential
I see nothing that says after a certain date passports are required. If you can find a reliable source claiming that, please post a link.

2016 is correct...at least until they choose to delay it, which the probably will since there are still a lots of places that haven't been issuing REAL ID compliant licenses.

The misunderstanding comes from this fact:
REAL ID enforcement goes into effect for entering federal buildings beginning on Jan. 19, 2015, and for flying domestically no sooner than 2016 (although you can still use a passport, too).
So a Kentucky drivers license is sufficient ID to board an airplane, at least until 2016.

I have a MA licence which is on the list that don't comply. I do not have a passport.

I flew to DC on Sept 28th and back on the 30th so this isn't in effect yet.

I have a rarely used Passport (got it for a cruise) so I always use it at the airport.

Just because I can ;)

Besides it never hurts to have 2 id's.

I've been on two trips where I've been in line with someone who lost their DL while on the trip. It's not pretty. One was on a charter group so they had a little easier time but the random guy just trying to get his ticket and while he was kind of losing his mind his poor wife/gf was just in tears.

I use my global entry ID, but any government issued ID is acceptable.

And so you know, the other little loophole here is that it doesn't need to be current. you can have an expired license. just not a slip of paper (ie a ticket) that you got if you had to give up your DL cause of a traffic issue.

If you are a US citizen you don't need a passport to travel by plane within any of the 50 states or Puerto Rico. Unless you are going to Alaska and have a layover in Canada, in which case you will need a passport.

Just curious; do you know of any US airline which routes fights originating in the US to Alaska which connect in Canada?

I would not count on any of this. My Veteran's photo ID issued by my county is regularly rejected. There have been lots of reports on Flyer Talk about expired IDs being rejected.

That said, you can fly without ID, but additional screening is required.

Most Canadian airports are staffed with US customs, so the boarding area is technically still US territory. You shouldn't need a passport to transit a Canadian airport.
