ID badge reel clip

Does anyone out there know how the ID badges get customized? Here's one for example:

I'd like to make one for myself. I do hand embroidery & my mom has an embroidery machine.

Im not sure about the clip but Joann's and other sewing / craft stores do sell buttons that you can cover with fabric.. They are usually used for dressing and outside furniture. You cover them with the fabric you are making the the item out of so they match perfectly..
My idea would be to get some of the lager ones for outside furniture and upholstery. Stitch out the design you want on the embroidery machine, on a full size piece of fabric that would fit in the hoop. Then cut the fabric down to fit the button..

Ater that you can glue on the clip..
