Several years ago (about 9?) My husband and I were driving home to Maryland from a trip to visit family in Upstate NY. We stopped somewhere in Central PA along the road to have dinner at a restaurant that just happened to be the first place we saw when we were hungry. It was a dairy and they made their own ice cream that they served at the restaurant. The food was good, but the ICE CREAM was to die for! Fresh peaches in the peach - fresh strawberries....just heaven! :lovestruc I had not had icecream like that since I was a small child. I made my husband go across the street to a gas station and buy a styrofoam cooler and bag of ice so we could take some home.

Anyway, we will be heading that direction soon and I would love to know the name of the place and look up the address so we can plan on going there. I don't even remember what town we were in, but my husband thinks it was near Lewisburg....I thought is was further north than that though. I know that if someone says the name it will ring a bell with me.

Pennsylvania is a really big state, where were you heading? Were you going North to South, East to West? Maybe someone who lives along the route would know

Was it along the major route you were traveling, or did you have to exit to local roads to reach it? I got some hits in Google by typing "fresh ice cream near Lewisburg PA".

Bechtel's was closed as of 2007, according to a review posted on yelp.

State College is in the middle of the state and The Creamery has great ice cream. Ummm! Peachy Paterno!

Ben & Jerry's based their recipe on the one from State College.

Do you remember if there was a big cow on the roof?

My DH grew up there and he has great memories of that place. I believe it was right on Rt. 15 and there is a gas station across the street.

Sorry.. he's very sad about it too.

He grew up outside Lewisburg and we live in Upstate NY so travel that route 3-4x a year.

Ok, I live in Central Pa and travel to upstate NY a lot. What road were you travleing on? Were you on Rt 81S going through Wilkes-Barre/Scranton area or were you on Rt 78/287 going through Jersey?

Totally 100% agree! Peachy Paterno is my favorite...PSU Coffee Break ranks right up there too!

We always bring some home with us after being up there. I really hope one of my kids decides to go to PSU!

I think there was a big cow on the roof! I was sure the name would ring a bell with me, but Bechtel's doesn't sound familiar....my husband is thinking that was it, we were on Rt. 15. Oh, if that is it, I am so sad they are closed! There are no more homemade icecream shops like that around us anymore, and that place was a treat.

PSU offers courses in ice cream making and they are conducted right behind The Creamery. Ben and Jerry are alumni of Penn State's Ice Cream Short Course.

"Just about every major ice cream company in the world has a Penn State connection—someone on the staff who has attended the short course or who is a Penn State graduate."

I'm not sure where in Maryland you are but Hoffmans in Westminster is well-known for their homemade ice cream....I love the black raspberry. There is also Simmons in Snydersburg (near Hampstead) that is also all homemade and is supposed to be wonderful. Maybe one of those would work in a pinch!

I'm in Baltimore - but I have been to Hoffmans in Westminster, and while I remember it being good, it didn't hold a candle to Bechtels in Lewisburg. I will have to try Simmons though - I had not heard of that one - I go up that way for kids soccer games sometimes.

Krieder Farms, they used to have a couple of resturants, and they did make there own ice cream and bottleed flavored milk, we used to stop to get the orange creamcicle milk yum!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You're right, nothing beats the Penn State Creamery!

We're lucky enough also to have Meyer's Dairy in State College where they also make their own ice cream and have a bottled milk jug operation still.
