Ice storm is coming......

Rock doctor thanks for the advice I think I will do that losing water is a pain. Stay warm where ever you are think spring. Just started to snow the games begin thanks for the info.

You'll probably never get enough snow to justify the cost of a generator, but it might come in handy if hurricanes move through. My daughter lived in SC for a few years and they probably lost power two hours total the whole time.

Sheila

As far as I'm concerned our generator was the best 'insurance' we could have bought. Just one week (hurricanes, ice storm, snow, which ever) without power is well worth the cost.

Had our home wired with a separate panel for the generator that powers our well, freezer, fridge, some lights, outlets, and the fan for our propane fireplace.

It has been worth it's weight in gold after only using it a few times in 12 years.
Now have 5" snow and sleeting and freezing rain, power may be out in morning.

They are not 'that' expensive, but is sure worth the peace of mind.

MrEVILdrPorkchop2u, How are you doing?

We have made out well considering. Half of the neighborhood has been without power and somehow we haven't lost ours yet. We ended up with about 3 inches of sleet and 3/4 of an inch of freezing rain on top of that. Right now we have some light freezing rain again. This is suppose to be done by 2 pm today. Everything is closed. I had to take our dog out a bit ago and he looked at me like I was crazy. You can actually walk AKA slide across the yard without making any footprints. Won't be surprised if we lose power. They have really done a great job keeping most people off the roads. Dealing with ice is so different than dealing with snow. Will be interesting to see what happens tomorrow with schools. My gut is we will be closed again. DW and I had planned to take a day trip tomorrow to Charleston. Pretty sure that will be postponed.

MREVIL glad your doing ok I hope your power stays on. We have 18 inches on the ground so far and its still snowing. Let the dog out and she just looked at me like I was crazy. Getting ready to go out and fire up the snow blower and have snow fun. Good luck think spring.

24 inches of snow on the ground 4 hours of playing with my snow blower. Got my driveway and road open but the main rd is still closed guess I'm not going anywhere. My poor dog rain in the deep snow got so tired I had to walk out in 24 inches of snow and carry her into the house. 3 inches more are coming tonight come on spring. Hope your doing well MREVIL good luck.

If you have a generator get an electrician to split up your power panel. They put in a second panel that will hold your emergency items: fridges, heat, well pump so on. When the power goes out turn off the breaker from the main panel supply to the emergency panel, plug in your gen to the emergency panel and you are back in business. Well pumps don't pull that much power and no reason your generator can't power your well.. Something to consider for the future. Good luck!

We had ours done differently. It's part of our regular box but there is switch to change from the grid to the generator. We then just pick whichever breakers we want on with the generator. We have a huge generator though so I think we can technically run the whole house on it.

This is what i have also. I just plug the gen into the panel with a cheater cord and i have an interlock that lets either the gen breaker or the main utility breaker on. Not both... I just turn back on the fridge, heat, water heater and FIOS box. I go with the smallest load possible to make the fuel last as long as possible. Upside it is a tri fuel gen so i can run gas, propane or natural gas, what ever i can get. I just have to remember as i go from gas to natural gas i loose about 20% capacity at each fuel type, due to the lower btu content of the fuel. So 5000w on gasoline, 4000w on propane or 3000w with natural gas.

WOW-stay safe folks! We had a major ice storm up here in toronto over the christmas holidays. Our power was out from Dec 21 to Dec 27, needless to say it was a bbq'd christmas dinner for us! Hang tight, spring is around the corner!
